Updated at 4:00 pm ET Reviving an issue Democrats first brought up when Mitt Romney ran for governor of Massachusetts in 2002, the Obama campaign said Thursday that Romney may have misstated his tenure at the helm of Bain Capital and might even have committed a felony by filing false statements with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Stephanie Cutter, Obamas deputy campaign manager, told reporters Thursday that either Romney was misrepresenting his position at Bain to the SEC which is a felony, or he was misrepresenting his position at Bain to the American people to avoid responsibility for some of the consequences of his investments. And if thats the case if he was lying to American people -- then thats a real character and trust issue that the American people need to take very seriously.
Referring to Cutter's insinuation about a possible felony, Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades said in a statement, President Obamas campaign hit a new low today when one of its senior advisers made a reckless and unsubstantiated charge to reporters about Mitt Romney that was so over the top that it calls into question the integrity of their entire campaign. President Obama ought to apologize for the out-of-control behavior of his staff, which demeans the office he holds."
The Obama camp's allegations came after the Boston Globe reported that Romney had remained as chief executive and chairman of Bain Capital until 2002, three years beyond the date he said he gave up control.

Whah....their picking on me.

Robert Heim, a lawyer with the SEC from 1993 to 1999, said the confusion could absolutely be a problem for Romney.
I think there is a sharp conflict between what Mitt Romney was saying his role was at Bain during his campaign appearances and what the SEC form that was filed describes his role as, he said. Certainly there can be legal consequences if the form that was filed with the SEC was inaccurate in any way.
There could be legal issues associated with his campaign forms with the FEC, Heim added. If Mitt Romney, in addition to making those statements on the campaign trail, also filed them with the Federal Election Committee, there could potentially be legal issues with his campaign finance disclosures into his employment background.

(12,272 posts)I have to say it, Romney's team is made up of Mormons and they are taught at an early age to obey authority and to lie. They are also taught how to debate, as they may have to defend the unbelievable stories in the Book of Mormon.
Yes, it is laughable now, but after the GOP National Convention, Mitt's team will start spending all that super PAC money to broadcast their message into homes across the country.
