Russia's ambassador to Turkey fatally shot in Ankara

Source: BI

Russia's ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov, was shot by an unidentified gunman while attending a private event at an Ankara art museum on Monday.

The Russian RIA news agency reported that Karlov died from his wounds.

Karlov had just given a speech at the event, hosted by the Ankara Center for Contemporary Art, when he was shot in the back about five times.

CNN Turk reported that the police operation to neutralize the gunman, who was still inside the museum when police showed up, is now over.

the relations are not good and haven't been for quite a while.

This could result in a conflict between the two that continually draws in other parties until it reaches a global scale.

I don't imagine that, to him, that includes Alevis in Turkey, or Shiites or Alawites in Syria.

After firing at the ambassador, the man, dressed in a suit and tie, shouted in Turkish: “Don’t forget Aleppo. Don’t forget Syria. Unless our towns are secure, you won’t enjoy security. Only death can take me from here. Everyone who is involved in this suffering will pay a price.”

He also shouted in Arabic: “We are the one who pledged allegiance to Muhammad, to wage jihad.”

Local media outlets said the killer showed a police ID to enter the gallery, citing security guards who were on the scene. The pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper claimed he was a cadre in the Ankara riot police. In video, he could be seen standing calmly behind Karlov before pulling out a pistol and opening fire.

I imagine that a Russian response to ISIS attacks in their homeland will be brutal to say the least.

But that's what terrorist groups feed off of, because brutal reprisals breed new recruits. And thus the cycle continues.
