FBI backs CIA view that Russia intervened to help Trump win election
Source: Washington Post
BI Director James B. Comey and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper have backed a CIA assessment that Russia intervened in the 2016 election in part to help Donald Trump win the presidency, according to U.S. officials.
...."A separate House intelligence briefing by a senior FBI counter-intelligence official last week left some Republican and Democratic lawmakers with the impression that the bureau wasnt on the same page as the CIA, according to officials present.
The truth is they were never all that different in the first place, an official said of the FBI and CIA positions.
In his message to the CIAs workforce, Brennan said the administration has provided detailed briefings to lawmakers and their aides since the summer.
In recent days, I have had several conversations with members of Congress, providing an update on the status of the review as well as the considerations that need to be taken into account as we proceed, Brennan wrote. Many but unfortunately not all members understand and appreciate the importance and the gravity of the issue, and they are very supportive of the process that is underway.....

(16,113 posts)I have yet to see a story that says the CIA or FBI has proof that Trump was involved in the hacking, but since you're suggesting "arrest him now" I figured you must be talking about someone else.

(16,113 posts)If you can't prove Trump was personally involved, there's nothing to arrest him for... And I have yet to see one of these reports from official or even anonymous sources in the CIA or FBI suggest that they have such information.

(13,566 posts)Or just hack emails and expose us to information that should have remained private?
If it's the former, yes the election results are not legitimate.
If it's the latter, then there's nothing we can do about it. Leaks happen in all campaigns. Like the Romney 47% incident. It's troubling that they came about from a foreign power, but I don't see how it would make the election results illegitimate. They weren't using top secret spycraft malware, like stuxnet. It was a run of the mill phishing email attack from hackers associated with the Russian government. It's such a low tech hack that it could have been any domestic hacker group.

Frankly, I am less concerned with the need to crack Russia's knuckles for being naughty boys than with the domestic consequences of an invalid election.

(289 posts)... this is big. Behind the scenes, there must have been a deal reached with the GOP and Democrats where both are going to feel they don't have any choice but to move on this.
We might see a deal where he is going to be replaced with Pence. Not the best outcome, but probably politically the one that will not result in an outright insurrection. Pence is at least predictable domestically and status quo as far as foreign policy.
