Hillary Clinton Ties Loss to Russian Hacking and Comey Letter

Hillary Clinton on Thursday night attributed her defeat to a convergence of two unprecedented events: the release of a letter by James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director, shortly before the election, and what she called an attack against our country by the Russian president, Vladimir V. Putin.
Mrs. Clinton has kept a low profile in the weeks since her defeat, mostly appearing on social media in photographs by passers-by who have spotted her walking her dogs near her home in Chappaqua, N.Y.
A few days after the election, she did talk about the impact of Mr. Comeys letter in a conference call with supporters. But speaking in Manhattan on Thursday to a group of her campaign donors, many of whom are still despondent over her defeat, she was particularly pointed about the role of Russia.
Mrs. Clinton said the letter Mr. Comey released disclosing new questions about emails handled by her private server had cost her close races in several battleground states. Swing-state voters made their decisions in the final days breaking against me because of the F.B.I. letter from Director Comey, she said.

(27,813 posts)I used to have a reputation for being very dry and sarcastic. That played well in Michigan. When I moved to Seattle, I was perceived as being mean and cold (pretty much the farthest thing from the truth there is). Donald Trump is stupid and thin skinned, and can't tell mockery from an ice cream sandwich. As a nation, we're losing our ability to be witty.

This should have been fought from day one.
I'm still hoping for a miracle.
I still think about DU being hacked on election night, and down for days.

(2,412 posts)Yes, this was defeat by a thousand cuts. For sure hacking, voter suppression, news media making a god out of Trump and hanging on his every word, and the decades long attacks on Hillary.
But her campaign also needs to look in the mirror as there is some responsibility to own up to.
At the risk of being disparaged here I offer that her image on TV was not bringing average folks to her side. The brightly colored silk suits and expensive jewelry may have been seen by struggling working families as a little bit over the top. I am aware that a male candidate may not be criticized
For his dress. But I remember John Kerry wearing a bright pumpkin colored barn jacket from LLBean, a yankee symbol, to talk to folks in Colorado. A jeans jacket would have been more down home there. He looked like a fish out of water. This is an era of image and image matters.

(22,007 posts)IMO, it's ok to blame Comey and Russia but only if other factors are also mentioned such as choosing not to campaign in Wisconsin and ignoring to connect with so many voters in rust belt (Sanders was able to connect just fine).
Comey and Russia may be are outside of our control for now. Let's think beyond the 2016 election on what is in our control - building coalitions with rust belt voters, seeking common ground. Tim Ryan is a good start. Whether we like it or not, we're gonna have to compromise.

(322 posts)Or ignoring states like WI considering it a lock while Trump campaigned hard and visited multiple times despite that state not going R since 84. Nah, it was probably the emails and some other skulduggery, winning a state by actually campaigning in it just coocoo.

But it will never be OK and I will never recognize that corrupt POS as my president for all the well-known reasons. Election Night was as bad for me as when I found out that my only child died in an accident. And I've read of many people who have felt the same way. ..worse than a close family member or friend passing away
