Report: Grade school, college hate-incident reports spike since Nov. 8

The Michigan Department of Civil Rights is monitoring 71 post-election reported incidents of hate and bias, including 19 incidents that occurred in K-12 schools.
The K-12 reports, as well as incidents at colleges across the state, account for more than half of the 71 incidents.
A formal complaint has been filed in one of the K-12 incidents — involving Royal Oak Middle School, where a small group of students chanted "build that wall" at Hispanic students the day after the election, and where a noose was found a week later in a boy's bathroom.
The numbers are unprecedented and reflect reports through Dec. 2, said Augustin Arbulu, the head of the civil rights department.
