Pastor says 'burn’ sermon on film taken out of context

TUSCALOOSA | Pastor Randy Fuller of New Beginning Family Worship Center said his Sunday sermon regarding the upcoming Bama Art House film “Turn Me On Dammit!” was misunderstood and taken out of context.

The Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa last month briefly took the movie out of its Bama Art House film series lineup after protests by Fuller and at least one other local pastor. After discussions with Mayor Walt Maddox and getting assurances that future funding for the arts would not be affected by programming choices, the Arts Council put the film, about teenage girls understanding their sexuality, back on the list. It is slated to show at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

In his text, Fuller spoke of a church located near a store that sold pornography. The parishioners prayed for God to burn the store down, and months later, he said, lightning created a conflagration.

In the sermon, Fuller said to his congregation, “So you can get together in groups of two or three or four and say, ‘God, if they won’t turn that thing around, burn the city block down. Burn it to the ground.’ ”

They aren't exclusive to the South and while the Baptist sort are more common here, they can be found nationwide.

Without that keeping them in check, people like this wouldn't bother praying for the place to burn down. They'd cut out the middleman and do it themselves.

Taken out of context; or an excuse to not take responsibility for bad behavior?

"praying for fire in a theatre."

Just when you think you've heard it all, some redneck comes up and pops one over the fence.

Surely he gets extra points for blaming the internet.

Any time a religious leader starts praying for the destruction of others, I have to wonder who they really work for.
