Police: 2 shot during Christmas parade in North Carolina

SANFORD, N.C. (AP) — Police say two people have been shot during a Christmas parade in central North Carolina.

Sanford Police Capt. Harold Layton tells the Sanford Herald that one person is in serious condition after the Monday evening shooting and the other person's injury is not life threatening.

Multiple media outlets report that the parade was halted after several shots were fired about 8 p.m.

Police say one suspect is in custody and the investigation is ongoing.

So many places it's so much easier to carry a gun around than it used to be.

It's also somewhat easier to kill somebody and get away with it, especially if it's just you and them. Sometimes easy even with witnesses if you are a cop.

I like guns myself, although I don't carry one. However I sort of wonder if people dropping guns and going off, and people getting shot out in public like this, sometimes over stupid stuff will eventually sour the public on the fad of having guns everywhere.

2 shot at Sanford Christmas Parade

Two people were shot at the Sanford Christmas Parade Monday night, according to the Sanford Herald’s Zachary Horner.

One person is in serious condition while the other has a non-life-threatening injury, Sanford police Capt. Harold Layton told Horner.

A suspect is in custody. It is not clear if there are more suspects.

Zach Berly, who said he was at the parade, told ABCNews that a group of African-American bikers participating in the parade were going by when what he believed to be between five and eight gunshots rang out.

"People immediately began running away in all directions screaming," Berly said.

He said police quickly appeared on the scene and began directing traffic away.
