BOUNTIFUL, Utah (AP) Two fast-acting parents disarmed their 15-year-old son at a Utah junior high school Thursday after they noticed the teenager acting peculiarly in the morning and realized he had taken the family's shotgun and handgun, police said.
The mother and father arrived shortly after the boy entered a classroom in the northern Utah city of Bountiful and fired one round into the ceiling, injuring no one but leaving a hole the size of a small plate, Bountiful Police Chief Tom Ross said.
The suspect also pointed the shotgun at his own neck, Ross said.
The boy didn't say a word as a teacher and one of 26 students tried to talk him out of firing again, giving his parents a few extra second to arrive at the classroom and take him into the hallway, Ross said.

(3,194 posts)I Know, I Know....the majority know all about gun safety, and keep their guns locked up tightly, and blah, blah, blah.
It's not a big deal really. The worst that could have happened is he may have shot a bunch of students in that classroom, and the teacher. Maybe himself too, who knows.
Thankfully his "responsible" gun owning parents thought he was acting "peculiarly." They wisely decided to check and see if any guns were missing.
Then....instead of calling the police, it sounds like they took it upon themselves to save the day, by confronting him in person. Gee.....it's a good thing the teacher and student tried to talk him out of firing again, which enabled the parents to reach the room just in the nick of time. I guess they didn't want to bother worrying the police over something so insignificant. After all, the worst that could have happened is a bunch of kids and a teacher would be dead. Maybe even a policeman or two.
But, we all make mistakes. Too bad the teacher didn't have a handgun, she could have stopped this right away.

(18,779 posts)by how often the police kill the person they were called to help. Especially when the word 'gun' is used...

(3,194 posts)After being responsible enough to keep the guns away from their "peculiarly" acting son, the last thing they wanted to do was call the police, and have their son killed because of their negligence, and frankly....Stupidity for having guns around. But I guess it's an American god-given right.
Meanwhile, in looking out for their own interests, and their gun toting "peculiarly" acting son, they risked the LIVES of countless others. Perhaps they will say that they were able to arrive before police would, but perhaps not. And again, the only thing that was really at stake, was the lives of everyone in that classroom. Lord knows how quickly he could have started picking them off, and long before any police would arrive, since the "responsible" gun owning parents, did not want to do the right thing and alert the authorities.
Screw the life of their kid. Nobody gave a shit when Adam Lanza got killed, but these incidents are the exception, only every now and then does a gun get used to shoot up a classroom.

(3,194 posts)Take away the parents' Fucking Guns. Take away their right to own firearms.
Otherwise, you know what? Accept the fact that from time to time, one of these guns is going to get loose. Perhaps it will be a 2 year old that shoots their sibling, and then themselves. Maybe a kid angry at being bullied, so he takes advantage of the gun in his house to take care of that bully, once and for all. Perhaps with some collateral damage.....Oh Well.
Then the parents will come out and say...."We never saw this coming." OR "We are grieving too." OR "Our BS Thoughts & Prayers are with the victims and their families." "Gee, we're sorry." That will make it better.
Zero Fucking Tolerance. You want your god-given constitutional right? Obey the fucking rules. Be more responsible than these delightful parents, or the mother of Adam Lanza. Well, I guess she did lose her gun owning rights.
