NBC News under fire for misleading tweets about Trump chief of staff's answer on Muslim registry

Source: businessinsider

NBC News came under fire Sunday morning for a pair of tweets that removed context from an answer Reince Priebus, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for White House chief of staff, offered on the idea of a Muslim registry.

Priebus appeared “Meet the Press” and was asked by host Chuck Todd if he could rule out the idea of placing Muslims on a registry.

Here was the exchange:

TODD: Can you equivocally rule out a registry for Muslims?

PRIEBUS: Look, I’m not going to rule out anything. But, we are not going to have a registry based on religion.

The public relations account for NBC News tweeted out the exchange twice, but left out the second part of Priebus’ response: ...............

By making the issue out to be that nbc made them look bad without context

No wonder things are so fucked up.

I don't see how the context makes it any better.

Asked "Rule out registry for Muslims?"

Answered "I'm not going to rule out anything."

The following quip about no registry "based on religion?" Do I hear a very high-pitched whistle there?

That should seriously piss off Muslims!

or rather, not only religion. i'm sure they'll incorporate many other factors besides religion: race, net worth, country of origin, union membership, so many things for a new registry to track. the real ugliness starts after they've set up the registry.

5. I have no problem with that tweet. RP's statement is a direct contradiction in a single sentence.

"Look, I’m not going to rule out anything. But, we are not going to have a registry based on religion."
But if you aren't going to rule anything out how do you know the registry won't be religion based?

Let their ratings fall thru the floor, advertisers will drop away. The power is in our hands. Checkout the app buycott. With your smart phone you can picture the universal bar code, in a quick response it will tell you who they support- koch bros, right wing companies etc. it's always about the money

I believe the first part; the sentence that is consistent with their rhetoric from the beginning.
