Marine Le Pen takes huge lead over Nicolas Sarkozy in new French presidential election poll

Source: The Independent

The far-right leader had 29 per cent of the vote when pitted against Les Républicains’ Nicolas Sarkozy, who was eight points behind, and held a 15-point lead over the Parti de Gauche’s Jean-Luc Mélenchon in the poll released by Ipsos, which analysed five scenarios with different frontrunners.

While Les Républicains’ Alain Juppe remains strong favourite to succeed Francois Hollande, the results are likely to add to growing fears that the rise of global populism could see Ms Le Pen on course to clinch the French presidential win, in the wake of the UK’s Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s victory in the US election.

It came as leading French philosopher Bernard-Henri Levy warned people had lost interest in whether politicians tell the truth, in a development he said could set the National Front on course to occupy the Élysée Palace.

“If Trump is possible, then everything is possible. Nothing, from now on, is unimaginable,” Mr Levy told The Telegraph.

The far right AfD would have to form a coalition with other parties, and I'm hoping that there won't be a viable way for that to happen, but that a grand coalition of the Christian Democrats, SDP, Greens and whoever else is not bigoted could form to stop them.

Most of this stuff is in reaction to immigration, in the US it's Mexicans.

In Europe, it's about the Muslims.

Thanks Bush!

Over and over again people want to find a populism that isn't white nationalism, and it never happens.

French ex-President Nicolas Sarkozy has been knocked out of a primary to choose the presidential candidate of the centre-right Republican party.

Admitting defeat, Mr Sarkozy endorsed Francois Fillon, a moderate who finished first in Sunday's first round, according to near-complete results.

Alain Juppe, who like Mr Fillon is an ex-prime minister, finished second.

They will face each other in a run-off next Sunday. The winner will compete in next year's presidential election.

I couldn't even remember that Fillon had been the PM. Apparently he impressed in debates. He admires Margaret Thatcher, so don't get too excited.
