(CNN)A nearly empty school bus crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into a commuter bus in Baltimore Tuesday morning, killing at least six people, police said.The school bus, which was blocks away from its first pickup of the day, had no children on board at the time of the crash, Baltimore Police spokesman T.J. Smith told reporters.

The crash, which injured at least 10 people, sheared the driver's side off the commuter bus, Smith said.

The school bus first hit a car, then went off the road into a cemetery and struck a pillar before returning to the roadway and colliding with the commuter bus, Smith said.

Video from CNN affiliate WBAL shows the school bus wedged into the side of the commuter bus, with firefighters surrounding the scene.
The school bus driver and five people aboard the commuter bus were killed, Smith said. Rescuers transported 10 people to local hospitals with injuries. Investigators are working to pinpoint what caused the crash.

6 dead after Baltimore school bus crashes into MTA bus

Six people have died after a city school bus crashed into an MTA bus Tuesday morning in Southwest Baltimore, police said.

T.J. Smith, a Baltimore Police spokesman, said the driver of the school bus and five people on the MTA bus were killed.

No students were on the school bus during the crash, he said.

The crash occurred before 7 a.m. in the 3800 block of Frederick Avenue. Smith said the school bus was headed east when it struck a Ford Mustang and a pillar on the side of the road before entering oncoming traffic and ripped through the driver's side of the MTA bus.
