Powerful quake hits central Italy near Norcia
12 minutes ago

A strong earthquake has struck near Norcia in central Italy, following last week's damaging tremors, experts report.

The quakes come nearly two months after a major earthquake killed almost 300 people and destroyed several towns in the region.

Sunday's quake measured magnitude 6.6, the largest so far, and was at a depth of only 1.5km (0.9 miles).

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

MT. VESUVIUS (Italy)

Last erupted: 1944

Effects of major eruption: Famous for wiping out Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 A.D., Vesuvius would do much greater damage today. About 3 million people live near the volcano, 600,000 of them in the "red zone." An eruption would kill at least 8,000 people and cause more than $24 billion worth of damage, according to Willis Research Network, which just named Vesuvius the most dangerous volcano in Europe. The ash would change weather patterns in Europe and leave the Naples area a "lifeless desert."

Likelihood: Scientists say Vesuvius is overdue for an explosion.

7. (Update) Powerful quake shakes Italy, topples Benedictine cathedral

NORCIA, Italy (AP) — Another powerful earthquake shook Central Italy on Sunday, sending panicked residents running into piazzas, raining boulders onto highways and toppling a Benedictine cathedral and other historic edifices that had withstood several recent quakes. There were no immediate reports of deaths.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 was the strongest to strike the country in nearly 36 years, hitting a mountainous region northeast of Rome where people were still unnerved after a pair of jolts last week and an August quake that killed nearly 300.

Some 20 people suffered minor injuries. That there were no reports of fatalities was largely due to the fact that thousands had left their homes after the earlier temblors.

Premier Matteo Renzi pledged that wrecked homes, churches and businesses would rise again, saying they were part of Italy's national identity. The government last week earmarked 40 million euros for rebuilding.
