American vigilante hacker sends Russia a warning
Source: CNN Money
An American vigilante hacker -- who calls himself "The Jester" -- has defaced the website of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in retaliation for attacks on American targets.
"I wanted to poke them in the eye and stop feeling like US is just taking it on the chin. Again," he said. "I'm not gonna sit around watching these f----rs laughing at us."
The Jester used a classic hacking technique, finding a hole in the website's computer code and injecting his own code into it.
"It's 4 a.m. in Moscow right now and a weekend. I'm hoping they can't fix the hole til Monday," he said.
As of 11 a.m. ET Saturday, the message remained online. Jester wants the Russians to take it seriously. He's not the only American hacker with this kind of capability.
"Think of this as a professional courtesy," his public warning states.

But "vigilante" sounds good for public distribution--we, after all, can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a lot of things. That's what secrets are for!

(833 posts)It's the job of the US government--intelligence services, etc.--to do this kind of stuff to the Ruskies. I wouldn't be surprised if such measures are being taken already--and against Wikileaks.

Thanks to The Jester for his hacking gesture.

(10,345 posts)fucking disgusts me. No lie.
You gonna root for the vigilante Oath Keepers stalking mosques with firearms too? What about the red caps beating up mexicans and saying it's the right thing?
This kind of shit isn't funny. Last time I checked, provoking another nation just because we've got tension between us, ISN'T A FUNNY FUCKING IDEA. How long until some dumbass civilian on our side fucks with something SERIOUSLY CRITICAL over there and really causes a REAL issue? You wanna root for that recklessness?
Trump calls for vigilantism. Trump calls for other nations to hack Hillary's stuff to give him the upper hand. Not us.
Idiots. And I have no apologies. Grow the fuck up.

(135,425 posts)Let me put it another way--just because we deny we did it doesn't mean we didn't do it.
It's not like that never happened before, ever.
smh.
And ya know what? If a country is going to "come at us" I'd rather they did it with pixels and bytes and packets and segments than bullets and bombs and poisoned gas.
Putin fired the first "shot" -- if he didn't expect fire to be returned, he's an "idiot" who needs to "grow the fuck up."

But, imagine how much of a country you could destroy just by destroying their medical records entirely. Cyberwarfare is clearly getting bigger. And it won't be a lesser alternative to warfare. It'll just be quieter and more omniscient.

(28,836 posts)To me: none of it is funny. Nations are provoking nations all the time. No once again, war isn't a funny idea. All wars are reckless. I think f*^#ing with the internet is seriously critical and has already caused real issues for us.
Does anyone really believe that our Government isn't already hacking other governments? For all we know, the Jester is the government hacking Russia. Ya think they are going to say it's us. No, let Russia think some "Jester" type is doing it.

In my imaginary world, there needn't be secrets. If you espouse a peaceful
policy, why must there be layers of deceit? My foreign policy: make the world
better. The endless flexing of military might is counterproductive.
