Part of a street in northwest D.C. was temporarily shut down Sunday evening as a hazmat team investigated a "suspicious" backpack.

D.C. Fire and EMS said there was an undetermined substance in the backpack discovered in the 400 block of 19th Street NW. Medics treated one person exposed to the substance.

About 6:40 p.m., fire officials said no hazards were found and the person has been taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The Northwest lanes of 19th Street from C Street to Virginia Avenue were closed as police and fire officials investigated. Fire units are now clearing the scene.
