Mystery substance in backpack found three blocks from White House

Part of a street near the White House was shut down Sunday afternoon while hazardous materials specialists investigated an undetermined substance in a backpack, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in the 400 block of 19th Street NW, near the Mall, federal offices and Constitution Hall. The site is two or three blocks from the western edge of the White House grounds.
The DC fire and ems department said one person was treated at the scene after possible exposure to the contents of the bag.

(112,219 posts)Part of a street in northwest D.C. was temporarily shut down Sunday evening as a hazmat team investigated a "suspicious" backpack.
D.C. Fire and EMS said there was an undetermined substance in the backpack discovered in the 400 block of 19th Street NW. Medics treated one person exposed to the substance.
About 6:40 p.m., fire officials said no hazards were found and the person has been taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The Northwest lanes of 19th Street from C Street to Virginia Avenue were closed as police and fire officials investigated. Fire units are now clearing the scene.
