Republican HQ in Orange County firebombed (North Carolina)
Source: Charlotte Observer
Hillsborough police are investigating an apparent firebombing of the Orange County Republican headquarters, an incident that one state GOP official called an act of political terrorism.
Police say the incident occurred when a bottle of flammable liquid was thrown through the front window of the office on Ja-Max Dr.
The office itself is a total loss, said Dallas Woodhouse, executive director of state GOP. The only thing important to us is that nobody was killed, and they very well could have been.
Police said the words, Nazi Republicans get out of town or else were spray painted on the side of an adjacent building.

Orange County is strongly Democratic but the rural 1/3 is republican with tea party leanings. It seems odd that anyone local and democrat would bother with this much attention to them, let alone fire bomb. There are other places I would expect this to happen in NC but not Hillsborough. I live 8 miles west of here and know the area and people well. This is SOOOOO out of character for a Democrat.
I will say that a few of the Libertarians I know might TALK this kind of angry. I don't see them as motivated enough to risk the police response to it. Whoever did this planned to do it and took their time writing on the nearby building. This kind of graffiti attack is uncommon around here but we have had some appear near several colleges.

(7,901 posts)It isn't clear how much burned but I am surprised that in only appears to have been the inside of the office and did not travel further in that building or along the others adjoining it. For a fire set in anger it seems rather modest.
No mention has been made of when it was seen and how it was put out, or by whom. That is a bit odd. The building is located away from any main street, on a hill behind trees that would have obscured it, in a row of buildings that are part of an antiques mall which would have been closed and empty on a Saturday night. Fire indoors there could easily gone undetected for quite a while.
The nearest fire station is 2-3 miles away. I suppose there may have been an alarm system inside but no mention has been made of one. Film at Eleven I guess, eh?

(50,559 posts)UNC basketball uniforms aren't the only blue thing in Orange County. It's one of the most liberal counties in the South, with Hillsborough in the center of the county, the University of North Carolina - Jesse Helms' favorite whipping boy - in the south and Carrboro, home of North Carolina's first gay mayor, just to the west of Chapel Hill.
I think what happened is very simple: the GOP in North Carolina is well and truly fucked this year. A lot of people there don't like Hillary...but they are good Christians and Trump is anathema to all they stand for. The state Party apparatus is probably pulling all its money out of lost-cause offices like Orange and focusing on more-friendly enclaves like west of I-77 and east of I-95. They were on the verge of getting evicted for nonpayment of rent, and decided to burn the place down to elicit sympathy. You know, what every mobster does when the banks cut them off.

(7,901 posts)I doubt they were closing up shop with Senate and House seats, not to mention county commission, state legislators and especially school board at stake. Trump may be a disaster but the locals aren't falling over yet nor is the NC GOP. They seem to have plenty of money and more than enough attitude to survive Trump.

There is even a television series now about people traveling back in time to change history. So the thought is in the air. Not that this is anything like Hitler or a bowing to Godwin's law, but radicals on either side are being stirred in a way not since a time prior to and the beginning of the 20th century.

(7,901 posts)When I was at UNC-Chapel Hill the Campus GOP crowd were very militant and hazed anything that smelled of liberal or humanist spirit. They took down license numbers at a Campus Democratic function, threw water balloons in the dark at peace protesters standing vigil against the Gulf War. They did stuff and said things which should have gotten them banned from campus. But they played the contrite bully when they were called to task for it, and it is said they had well heeled and well placed friends in higher office. They certainly took the book of Rove very much to heart. To my knowledge they haven't changed at all since then.

(6 posts)Would we be allowing people to peddle the same sort of conspiracy theories if this was one of ours that got firebombed? Look, there are kooks on both sides of the spectrum, there's no denying that. When we peddle Trumpian conspiracies in the face of this sort of act, we degrade the high ground that we fight so hard to stand on. What's more is that we endanger our focus on being the reality-oriented party in this country.
If it comes out that it was some Reichstag-esque shenanigan, then it will come out. Putting on our coiffed wigs and strutting out infowars-lite content is below us, and we absolutely should not allow this kind of rhetoric to contaminate our party, our beliefs, our creeds.
Remember, we are all Americans, those of us who are citizens of the USA. Those words mean something. We should stand by our political opponents when something like this happens, and send a clear message that neither side should tolerate this kind of behavior. If it comes out that this was a false flag, that revelation will be underscored by our integrity and will resonate the stronger for it.
Ford_Prefect
(7,901 posts)That really is suspicious. I've been in that building back when it was a store-front, long before the GOP set up in there. That the fire was self containing is quite suspicious given all the plastic and paper signs and paperwork on the desks in that room.

The incident was condemned across the political aisle, from presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to local officials and a group of academics.
Zeynep Tufekci of the University of North Carolinas School of Information Science first tweeted about Democrats helping the GOP office, and David Weinberger of Harvards Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Technology later launched a campaign on GoFundMe.
Zeyneps idea of having Democrats contribute to re-opening a Republican
office that was a victim of political terrorism no matter who was responsible struck a chord with me, and apparently with lots of other people, Weinberger told BuzzFeed News.
As Democrats, we are starting this campaign to enable the Orange County, North Carolina Republican office to re-open as soon as possible, Weinberger wrote on the funds page.
