London Zoo gorilla Kumbuka recaptured after enclosure escape

Source: BBC

A male gorilla has been recaptured after escaping from its enclosure at London Zoo.

The zoo said Kumbuka, a western lowland silverback, had escaped into the secure keepers' area.

It added that the gorilla, which arrived from Paignton Zoo in Devon in early 2013, had not escaped into a public area.

A spokesman for the zoo said that at no time were any of its visitors in danger.

Sounds like he doesn't want to be there. Why not send him home? n/t TygrBright Oct 2016 #1

Or enjoy some "bush meat"?

I am very ambivalent about zoos, but if the animal's environment is top-notch, at least that animal is alive for possible captive breeding programs to preserve the species.

I do realize the ethical conundrum. I really do. It would be so much better if he were free. And if there were no poachers, or if the gorilla at least could shoot back in a fair fight. Let's arm the elephants and gorillas and lions and tigers and bears with shoulder-launched missiles and AK-47s.

Although they did have weapons. I understand they manage to do this with people too in the UK.

I never realized that this particular population of lowland Gorillas are even larger than the mountain gorillas, which I was taught were the largest members of the species as a child.
