Mandatory evacuations are underway in South Carolina as three states brace for Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew will likely strike Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina Friday.

It will likely make landfall in Florida as a powerful Category-4 or Category-3 storm. It should weaken somewhat as it moves north, but will still pack a significant punch.

Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina has ordered mandatory evacuations along the coast, according to CNN. The governors of Florida and Georgia have declared states of emergency and asked residents to prepare. Several barrier islands in Florida have also begun evacuations. As far north as North Carolina, officials are asking tourists to cut short their vacations.

The eye of Hurricane Matthew, the most powerful Atlantic storm since 2007, hit Cuba Wednesday morning as the major tropical cyclone advanced toward the Bahamas.

He pointed out all the great protective features regarding wind and water. Still, if I were me I would not stay to test it out.

When Hurricane Ike was headed for Galveston they had a mandatory evacuation. Of course there's always people who have no means to leave and folks that are just pigheaded. They were checking door to door. Still about 40% on the island stayed. After Ike hit, Galveston was uninhabitable for weeks. Idiots!

We're a bit inland in the Space Coast area, on the mainland. We're packing "go-bags" just in case, and have located a pet-friendly shelter not too far from us. We'll get all ready tomorrow and see what things look like Friday morning.

after it hits FLA saying it may circle around and do it again (latest computer tracking reported by ABC World News). Hurricanes have a history of doing this so lets hope the forecast is wrong.

Hurricane Matthew: Category Four storm approaches Florida

Hurricane Matthew has strengthened to a Category Four storm as Florida residents are warned to prepare for a "direct hit".

The hurricane has pounded the Bahamas after devastating parts of Haiti.

Damage could be "catastrophic", Florida's governor said. Evacuation orders are in place along the coast.

Matthew, with winds of 125mph (205km/h), is expected to hit southern Florida later on Thursday with a powerful storm surge, US officials say.

My daughter evacuated from NOLA due to Hurricane Katrina. Yesterday she evacuated Charleston. Her husband (from Washington) did not understand why she took so long deciding what she could and could not live without to pack into the car. He blamed it on pregnancy hormones. She said she left her home anticipating she would never see it again. I am hoping the area get spared the worst of it. I don't think she can survive this twice.
