Hungary referendum rejects EU mandatory migrant plan
Source: BBC
Hungarians who voted in a referendum on Sunday have overwhelmingly rejected mandatory EU migrant quotas, the national election office has said.
But exit polls suggest that turnout failed to reach the 50% needed for the result to be valid.
With nearly all the votes counted, 98% rejected the quotas, officials said.
Right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban urged Hungarians to reject the EU scheme, describing it as a threat to Europe's security and way of life.

Hungary PM claims EU migrant quota referendum victory
2 October 2016 Europe
Hungarian PM Viktor Orban has declared victory in a referendum on mandatory EU migrant quotas, despite a low turnout that appeared to render it invalid.
Nearly 98% of those who took part supported the government's call to reject the EU plan.
But only 43% of the electorate voted, short of the 50% required to be valid.
A government spokesman said the outcome was binding "politically and legally" but the opposition said the government did not have the support it needed.

the opposition said the government did not have the support it needed.
Sounds like the opposition party(s) will continue to play the role of the opposition.

(24,330 posts)3. Hungarian Law requires 50%+1 turn-out
They didn't get the turn out so under the law it failed
But also under that law, the referendum to join the EU also failed almost two decades ago
