Syria war: John Kerry urges no-fly zones

The US Secretary of State, John Kerry, has called for all planes to be grounded in key areas of Syria to save the collapsed truce, following an attack on aid convoy.

In a blistering speech at the United Nations, Mr Kerry said the future of Syria was "hanging by a thread".

He said Monday's attack, which killed 20 civilians, had raised profound doubt over whether Russia and the Syrian government would live up to terms of the ceasefire deal.

Moscow has denied being involved.

3. Different time, different idea -

Hillary was calling for a border area to be defined as off limits to aircraft. In fact, Turkey taking over a border area recently is de facto closer to this. The problem was that nothing was said of getting Russia, which has aircraft there to agree.

What Kerry is calling for is that there be no flights over areas like Aleppo while they get aid distributed throughout the country and get a country wide ceasefire. This is much broader and importantly, he is calling for this at the UN and is asking Russia etc to join the call. These are not the areas that were proposed as no fly zones and the words "no fly zone" were not used.

What is similar is both are motivated by a goal of protecting people caught in this nightmare.

4. Remember what happened when

the US called for a no fly zone in Libya to "protect" civilians? they used to opportunity to attack the infrastructure of the country and ended up assisting the rebels to defeat the govt forces and their supporters.

How many times is the US going to play this trick before countries learn not to trust the US govt? I would first ask the countries not invited by the legitimate govt in the country to leave. When that happens, the war will end months after that.
