Syria conflict: UN suspends all aid after convoy hit

Source: BBC

The UN has suspended all aid convoys in Syria after its lorries were attacked by warplanes near Aleppo on Monday.

The convoy had received proper permits, and all warring parties - including Russia and the US - had been notified, a UN spokesman said.

Eighteen of the 31 lorries, containing wheat, winter clothes and medical supplies, were destroyed.

A senior official of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent was among a number of civilians killed.

While some aid was delivered, agencies were severely hampered in the initial days of the ceasefire, unable to cross the border into Syria as they lacked permits from the government, UN officials said last week.

The convoy, however, had come from inside Syria, the World Food Programme told CNN. It was carrying crucial aid to around 78,000 people when it and the aid warehouse were attacked near the embattled city of Aleppo, the United Nations and aid agencies said. The area west of the city is reportedly rebel held.

UN and US officials said they were "disgusted" and "outraged" by the attack.

Syrian Civil Defense, a volunteer emergency medical service, posted video of the attack's aftermath on social media showing a warehouse ablaze and claiming that helicopters had dropped four barrel bombs on the site of a Syrian Arab Red Crescent aid warehouse, blaming the Syrian regime.

The Syrian government said it would block any humanitarian aid entering Aleppo that was not “coordinated” with the government and the U.N. It said this applied especially to Turkey, which has long supported the Syrian opposition seeking the ouster of President Bashar Assad.

De Mistura said Syria only had to be notified about U.N. aid shipments to Aleppo and had no right to inspect or block it.

Imagine a sovereign country not being allowed to inspect the "aid" going into terrorist controlled areas? Heck the US insists on inspecting Iranian aid going to the poor people in Yemen and Iran allows it. This is one of those rare cases where u are probably doing something wrong if you are trying to prevent people from looking.

Just imagine how much longer, destructive and deadlier the US civil war would have been if it had been micromanaged at every step by Confederate army sympathizers. The US should just stop everything they are doing in that country, they have tried their hardest to break the will of the Syrian people and it has failed.

The trucks destroyed did NOT come from Turkey, but from another area of Syria.

This is a war crime - pure and simple.

Some other party to the agreement blatantly attacked the Syria govt outpost in Deir Ezzor killing 65 troops, injuring 100 and enabled ISIS to advance in the area? All done during the ceasefire but I guess all is forgiven because the people breaking the ceasefire are Americans and they apologized for it, right?

But let blame the victim here for bombing who know what at the Red crescent compound that was gifted to rebels attacking the country by the foreign sponsors of this war. Btw, the Syrian govt called off the ceasefire after the US and rebel groups violated it hundreds of times before bombing the hell out of that "aid" package.

I still do not know why the US has to stick its ugly nose into the affairs of the Syrian people. Its not like they support rebels groups overthrowing "corrupt" govts everywhere cos unlike in Libya and Syria, they are assisting in attacking the rebels in Yemen, a group of locals who had successfully thrown off their corrupt western back leader.

Sadly, the one good thing I see in Trump winning the POTUS is that democrats will start being anti war again.

In fact, the toughest part from our side is that we have so few good cards to play.

Given ISIS and Nusra on the sides, what would you suggest as a way out. There are no good alternatives here -- and there are worse alternatives.
