There's plenty of woodwork to come out from for everyone, because on a planet with 7+ billion people, you can find at least one person of any ideology that will do something good or bad. Then it depends on what your own personal definition of good or bad is, and you justify or rationalize, or can't justify or rationalize, what happens if you like or dislike whatever it is that happened.

(1,975 posts)It (to me anyways) sounds like you were hoping the suspect would have blond hair blue eyes and wearing a Trump2016 T shirt.
It is a fact, that there is a segment of radicalized Muslims who are at war with the West. To deny it, deflect, or make excuses is just plain silly.
When the news first came out there were several posts hoping that it was a trump supporter trying to move public opinion. What the hell is the matter with some people?!

(1,384 posts)Because all it does is plays into Trump's hands and further marginalizes an already marginalized minority. Now all the Trumpsters will be banging the "Muslim bad" drum even louder and this time people may actually fall for it. Until now, Trump has been fringe. I do this not because I want any particular ethnic group to be responsible, I just don't want us to be. I know the inevitable racism and prejudice that will be displayed on Facebook and other online sources towards blacks in general, as it always is with such events, and I'm just sick of it. I kinda view this incident in the same light. Racists and xenophobes use events like this to denigrate entire races and religions. It is fuel to their fire. Me hoping not to provide them additional fuel is not wrong, and I would have thought my reasoning was readily apparent in my previous statements.

(2,103 posts)New York officials have identified a suspect wanted for questioning over Saturday's blast in the Chelsea area of the city.
The man has been identified as Ahmad Khan Rahami, 28, a naturalised US citizen from Afghanistan.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) has released a photograph.
The explosion injured 29 people. Both the detonated bomb, and a device found nearby, were shrapnel-filled pressure cookers, according to US media.

Second, when voters vote based on fear of terrorism or other national security threats they usually vote Republican.
Third, even though Clinton is lightyears more qualified to handle terrorism and foreign policy, I am afraid that if people are voting based on terrorism and national security, some voters are unfortunately less likely to want to put a woman in charge, as f*cked up as that is.

http://www.loonwatch.com/2011/12/eye-opening-graphic-map-of-muslim-countries-that-the-u-s-and-israel-have-bombed/
Under Barack Obama, the U.S. is currently bombing Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, and Libya. According to some reports (see here and here), we can add Iran to this ever-expanding list. [Update: An Informed Comment reader named Shannon pointed out that in fact the United States bombed Iran in 1988 during Operating Praying Mantis, an act that cannot be justified according to the International Court of Justice.]
Thanks to American arms and funding, our stalwart ally Israel has bombed every single one of its neighbors, including Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt. Israel has also bombed Tunisia and Iraq (how many times can Americans and Israelis bomb this country?).
The total number of Muslim countries that America and Israel have bombed comes to fourteen: Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, Iran, Sudan, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, and Tunisia.
Add to this the fact that Saudi Arabia is one Muslim country that really does live up to its negative stereotype. You know who arms them and supports their brutality: the USA. The US is now directly supporting Saudi Arabia's slaughter in Yemen. It was also the US that helped spread Saudi Arabia's conservative version of Islam.

After that, we did not provide the resources for schools and infrastructure we promised in Afghanistan and the children grew up educated in fundamentalist schools, hearing about our betrayal. Why wouldn't they hate us? Their fathers uncles, grandfathers who might have been positive role models were dead, so someone else stepped in.

Odd, no? (No.)
christx30
(6,241 posts)they hate us. 9/11 was done before Iraq, Syria, ISIS, ect. Why did they hate us back then? Over 2800 people died that day for absolutely no reason. There is a strain of fanatical Islam that is simply intolerant of anyone that is not a Muslim. Or isn't the right kind of Muslim. Remember the biggest loss of life is the 1400 year old war before Sunni and Shia. That one is never going to stop.
And even if we nailed down a reason, why should we have to change a damn thing? Normal groups are able to talk about their differences without flying airplanes into buildings, or stabbing a bunch of random strangers in a mall.
So the question becomes: What are you willing to give up to get them to stop hating us in the west? A large part of what they don't like is that we are Infidels. We don't follow their faith. Are you willing to convert? Are you willing to allow the gays in your life to be hung, or thrown off buildings, like they do in Saudi Arabia and Iran ("In Iran we do not have this phenomenon" ?
Would you be OK with seeing womens rights curtailed?
They hate us for a lot of reasons. And some of those reasons are perfectly OK. If the choice is between being loved by fanatics or letting my vote and drive, I'd rather be hated by the fanatics.

What we can do is control our own actions (at least theoretically, since Washington DC is so corrupt it's hard to change), from there, things will improve.
So sick of everything being blamed on the West and the US. It's true that American foriehn policy played a part in today's madness, but it would be naive to say radical Islam wouldn't have come to fruition wirhout the meddling of the West.
Western society didn't tell Muslims that they had to conquer the world and kill infidels or fight amongsts sects of the religion to see who were the rightful followers.
