Multiple people have been injured after an explosion at 23rd street and 6th avenue in midtown Manhattan. The explosion has been described as “outdoor” by the FDNY. One apparent witness, Camelia Entekhabifard, said that the blast was caused by a “bomb in a trashcan.”




ABC New York’s CeFaan Kim reports that one of the injured is an 8-year-old boy who was sitting in a car close to where the explosion took place.

Josh Marshall has a post on his TPM site giving context to the building, street, and neighborhood where explosion happened. E.g., Explosion happened in front of home for the blind. First floor used as voting site. Building has had construction going on for awhile. He does not have additional info about cause of the explosion itself but will share anything he learns.

in front of 131 W 23rd Street, which is next door to the large housing facility for the blind. Other reports say it was in a large construction tool box.

107. Yes, any act of violence on a large scale "terrorizes." BUT we distinguish Terrorism....

...from the acts of lone gunmen (or acts of a few gunmen) because it tells people if they need to worry about more such bombs being set off, even if the perpetrator is caught, or if catching the perpetrator(s) will put an end to the violence. 9/11, after all, was not one crazy guy taking over a plane and crashing it. It was a group of trained terrorists with a plan that included several targets. And we didn't know, post 9/11, if all those involved had died, or if there were more planning on hijacking more planes.

Meanwhile, the guy who shot up that club in Orlando was NOT a terrorist. He wasn't working for an organization (international or domestic) that planned to keep on shooting up clubs till it achieved its political ends. He was a single, angry/crazy man. Taking him out ended the violence.

In short, "Terrorism" as we now define it has nothing to do with how the violence was done (well planned? Spur of the moment?), or how many lives it took. It has to do with who did it and why they did it (working alone or part of an organization? Personal grudge or political agenda?). You don't have to agree with the distinction, but it helps us to know if we have to be on guard from members of an organization--and eradicate that organization in order to put an end to these bombings--of if catching one perpetrator will put an end to this.

Second device on West 27th St appears to be pressure cooker

There are several reports that the second device found on West 27th Street has been found to be a pressure cooker.

After the explosion on 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue in Chelsea on 8.30pm Saturday, a “possible secondary device” was found a few blocks away.

J. Peter Donald, the assistant commissioner for communication and public information for NYPD, described the device as a “suspicious package” in an update posted to Twitter at about midnight local time and asked residents of the street to “stay away from windows” as it was cleared.


The Wall Street Journal has reported that a law enforcement official said the second device was a pressure cooker, with wiring and a cellphone attached, inside a plastic bag.

ABC, Fox News, NY1, Associated Press, and CNN have said the same. (Earlier, CNN was among the first outlets to rule out the possibility that the blast on 23rd St was a gas explosion.)

Reports of the apparent pressure-cooker bomb have prompted social media users to make connections to the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, but authorities have been clear that there is no evidence of any links to terrorism at this stage.

“There is no specific and credible threat against New York City in this point of time from any terror organisation,” said mayor Bill de Blasio earlier.

I ask because that involved the homemade explosive TATP, which is tricky to make, and previously used in the 2016 Brussels, 2015 Paris and 2005 London attacks.
