Trump Adviser, Son Post Image of Trump's 'Deplorables' Featuring White Nationalist Symbol

Source: NBC News

by Ali Vitali

A white nationalist symbol has made its way into the latest back and forth in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Amid the flurry of statements about Hillary Clinton calling "half" of Donald Trump supporters a "basket of deplorables," — a reference to some of the Republican nominee's supporters who ascribe to views popular among the white nationalist-linked alt-right movement — informal Trump adviser and confidante Roger Stone tweeted a picture of the poster from the movie "The Expendables" altered as "The Deplorables." Donald Trump, Jr., one of Trump's sons, posted the same image on Instagram. The origin of the image is unclear.

The Photoshopped faces in the picture include Trump, running mate Gov. Mike Pence, Gov. Chris Christie, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Dr. Ben Carson, both of Trump's eldest sons, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, alt-right icon Milo Yiannopoulos, and Stone himself. Prominently featured over Trump's right shoulder: popular white nationalist symbol, Pepe the Frog.

"Pepe the Frog is a huge favorite white supremacist meme," Heidi Beirich of the Southern Poverty Law Center told NBC News of the meme. While Pepe the Frog may not be a household name, the meme is known to members of the alt-right on the internet. "It's constantly used in those circles," Beirich said. "The white nationalists are gonna love this because they're gonna feel like 'yeah we're in there with Trump, there's Pepe the Frog.'"

White Nationalist supporters? Jesus. What kind of drugs make a human think this is a way to win an election, a way to unite a country?

I'll say this--it will fun watching them realize how small their numbers really are come election night. It will only be surpassed the next morning when we get to watch them all slither back under their fucking rocks in complete humiliation.

As to the rest of it, they will wear it like a badge of honor and pointing it out will only make them wear it harder, because they're PROUD of their ignorance.

the people in the dark slimy corners of the Internet have hijacked other images for their movement, including Gabe Newell, Doge, and Shrek. Pictures of Donald Trump are ubiquitous among them, mixed in with images glorifying notorious dictators.

I'm well acquainted with them because they come out of the blue to spam obscenities on my YouTube channel.

They post a picture of themselves with deplorable symbols? They literally just proved her right!
It's like Trump is playing checkers and the Clinton camp is playing Duel Monsters.
Trump team: They've played the race card! We must respond. Meme photo attack!
Clinton team: You've activated my trap card!
Trump team: Oh No! GASP!

Not sure why they would embrace it. What's up next, a rewrite of the Lee Greenwood song "Proud to be a Deplorable"?

I was hoping for a Stormfront cross or some SS lightening bolts.

I didn't even realize this cartoon frog was a symbol of white nationalism.

That frog meme has been around on the internet in various iterations for probably 8 or so years. I'd say of the thousands of images created the vast majority are apolitical and usually just dark humor, if you want to call it that, like Pepe as the German Wings pilot smiling as he crashes the plane into the mountain. Or like him as the guy who shot the reporter on live tv.

It's usually a symbol of the asocial internet neckbeards. Now I'm sure there is probably some overlap but to call it a White Nationalist symbol is a stretch in my opinion.

And other home-grown terror groups. The groups prefer to fly under the radar...at least, until recently. Then some fool decided to embrace them on the public stage....

This story has been updated.

Donald Trump Jr., an adviser and surrogate for his father's presidential campaign, told followers on Instagram this weekend that he'd "made the cut" as one of the "deplorables" denounced by Hillary Clinton — and shared an image that portrayed Donald Trump and his running mate alongside fringe radio host Alex Jones and a cartoon icon associated with the white nationalist alt-right.
