Clinton: World may not succeed in Syria
Source: CNN
Geneva, Switzerland (CNN) -- There is no guarantee that a sweeping new international agreement on Syria will succeed in ending the conflict there, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton conceded, as opposition activists said the number of dead had skyrocketed in recent months.
"There is no guarantee that we are going to be successful. I just hate to say that," Clinton told CNN.
But she expressed optimism that a new agreement hammered out Saturday would help ease President Bashar al-Assad out of power.
The first plan backed by Russia and China as well as the West, it calls for a transitional government as a step towards ending the 16-month uprising.
Opposition activists immediately criticized the deal as leaving open the possibility that al-Assad would remain in power.

(10,538 posts)It seems intolerable to simply let it drag on while the population is slaughtered; and I fear it sets a bad precedent, encouraging other tyrants. Yet I'm generally very reluctant w.r.t. military intervention.

(5,764 posts)is that the U.S. has a preordained right to determine the political and economic destinies of smaller, weaker countries. It's a given, it seems, for most Americans, with no critical thought applied to questioning the logic of such chauvinism. The sentiment seems religious in nature.

(248 posts)I thought that we were not the cops of the world anymore. Why should we now pretend to take the high road and back regime change on the grounds that we have to save a people from it's murderous government. Perhaps the ultimate hypocrisy is that even if Assad goes, everybody else will remain in place. Nothing will change, except maybe, for everyone patting themselves on the back at what a good job they did. Oh please. And then there's that senile Arizona Senator who wants to arm an opposition he knows nothing about and which is doubtless antagonistic to American interests in the region.

It's not about Syrian oil and gas fields.......
This is more Saudi's war of containment than it is the US war for dominance... errr... democracy in our time.
