No more 'Golden Week' for Ohio voters, court rules

Ohio voters should not have a "golden week" in which they can both register to vote and cast a ballot, a federal appeals court declared today.

"Proper deference to state legislative authority requires that Ohio’s election process be allowed to proceed unhindered by the federal courts," said a three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that split 2-1.

"Ohio is a national leader when it comes to early voting opportunities. The state election regulation at issue allows early in-person voting for 29 days before Election Day. This is really quite generous," the majority said.

Today's ruling overturned a decision last spring by Judge Michael Watson of U.S. District Court in Columbus. He ruled that the GOP-dominated state legislature's measure, signed by Gov. John Kasich, violated the U.S. Constitution and federal Voting Rights Act by eliminating the week of early voting, used disproportionately by minority voters.

Get out there and get people involved, help people get registered, help them do what ever they need to do to get to vote.

In Ohio we have until Voter Registration Ends: Deadline for voter registration for Nov. 8 general election October 11,2016 to get people registered.

virtually nothing of consequence.

Should I have alerted a Forum Host about the sloppy headline reporting?
Would that have been better?

Shouldn't we expect better than sloppy headlines here?

and then to be reinstated because the Ohio Republicans acted to discriminate against a minority group and a political party.
