Trump: I Would Stop Crime By Letting ‘Tough’ Cops Take Charge

Source: Talking Points Memo:

Pushed by Fox News host Bill O’Reilly to provide specifics on curbing violent crime in cities like Chicago, Donald Trump said Monday that he would simply put “tough” cops in charge.

“So, specifically, specifically. How do you do it? How do you do it?” O’Reilly asked.

“I know police in Chicago,” Trump replied. “If they were given the authority to do it, they would get it done.”

“How? How?” O’Reilly pressed.

“You have unbelievable—how? By being very much tougher than they are right now,” Trump said. “They are right now not tough. I mean, I could tell you this very long and quite boring story but when I was in Chicago, I got to meet a couple of very top police. I said, ‘How do you stop this? How do you stop this? If you were put in charge,’ to a specific person, ‘Do you think you could stop it?’ He said, ‘Mr. Trump, I would be able to stop it in one week.’ And I believed him 100 percent.”

Trump, who has actively courted the endorsement of the national Fraternal Order of Police union and campaigned as the “law and order” candidate said that he would serve as a “cheerleader for the police” as president.

Stumbling over himself until he figures out who he can hand the ball off to, and it's usually not someone who should be trusted without oversight.

He makes asinine statements about how the country will be safer on his first day in office. How people will stop getting shot while walking down the street if he becomes president. He hadn't explained how this will be accomplished, until now. He's planning to give police departments carte blanche to enforce justice as they see fit. Civil liberties will really take a backseat under Drumpf.

Plenty of potential for his new guards here on the beat but Homan Square is a step up

From your link for some who are not local may not remember
Regardless of departmental regulations, police frequently deny or elide access to lawyers even at regular police precincts, said Solowiej of First Defense Legal Aid. But she said the outright denial was exacerbated at Chicago’s secretive interrogation and holding facility: “It’s very, very rare for anyone to experience their constitutional rights in Chicago police custody, and even more so at Homan Square,” Solowiej said.

Church said that one of his more striking memories of Homan Square was the “big, big vehicles” police had inside the complex that “look like very large MRAPs that they use in the Middle East.”

Cook County, home of Chicago, has received some 1,700 pieces of military equipment from a much-criticized Pentagon program transferring military gear to local police. It includes a Humvee, according to a local ABC News report.

Tracy Siska, a criminologist and civil-rights activist with the Chicago Justice Project, said that Homan Square, as well as the unrelated case of ex-Guantánamo interrogator and retired Chicago detective Richard Zuley, showed the lines blurring between domestic law enforcement and overseas military operations.

“The real danger in allowing practices like Guantánamo or Abu Ghraib is the fact that they always creep into other aspects,” Siska said.

“They creep into domestic law enforcement, either with weaponry like with the militarization of police, or interrogation practices. That’s how we ended up with a black site in Chicago.”

Thanks Friend Fr the link to highlight how he'd get it done

Tue Aug 23, 2016, 12:34 PM

...I know it seems backwards. Like the police should take offense and say, "Whadda mean we're not tough?" But Trump knows how work the playground mentality, and this goes back to that. He says, "Sissies are running things, and we need tough guys to run it instead." And the other boys on the playground think, "he's not talking about me. I'm not a sissy. I'm the tough guy who he wants to run things...." And that makes them all act extra tough and mean, because they want to prove they're not the sissies he's talking about. And they grab onto his excuse as well. "Every one's blaming us for things not being orderly. But that's only because they won't let us be as tough as we need to be..."

I'm not saying that all police will think this way. But it's typical Trump. He has to imply that the cops aren't/can't do their job (if crime is down, then why would voters vote for him rather than continue with the democrats?). But he is calling the police "sissies"--how does he keep them on his side? By adding, "You're not all sissies, it's just those running things that are. The best of you are tough, and we'll put you in charge when I'm elected...."

It plays well both to his base and to cops who feel like they're being persecuted, not appreciated and targeted.

What "tougher" measures would he employ. We already have the highest prison population in the world. And that doesn't even count the likes of Michael Brown. Since you can't get any tougher than that, what is he talking about. What is unbelievable is that Trump doesn't even understand that he ducked the question on "how". There are never any specifics in what Trump says. Jobs and not more prisons are what is needed. But such deep thinking eludes Trump every time.

Claiming that violence and crime were up because the police had stopped shooting unarmed men? Which apparently was emboldening the criminal element to go on a crime spree? The logic (apparently) being that cops need to be shooting down "suspicious looking" individuals to keep the criminals in check.

By that logic, kill them all and then you'll have no more crime. These 2 really are birds of a feather.

There have been many articles in the media recently about a list of 1400 "strategic subjects" maintained by the Chicago Police Department. The police won't publicize the list of names or the criteria for inclusion on the list, but they claim that a very high percentage of shooting victims and perpetrators were on the list. It wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibility for certain police officers to be itching for the ability to simply round up everyone on the list.

They pay tremendous amounts in Overtime rather than hire more cops, its a stupid tactic that finally causes morale problems and decreases effectiveness. Many administrative jobs are being done by Sgts. when at Lt. or Higher should be doing them, because they lag in promotions.
