Police fatally shoot man with hearing, speech impairment

Source: CBS News

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A driver shot and killed by a North Carolina trooper Friday following a brief pursuit was hearing and speech impaired, according to a police report.

The incident began about 6:15 p.m. Thursday when a trooper tried to pull over a vehicle for a speeding violation on Interstate 485, the patrol said in a news release. The driver led authorities on a brief pursuit before stopping, according to the release.

Officials said that’s when the driver got out of his car and an encounter took place between the driver and the trooper, causing a shot to be fired. The driver died at the scene.

It is not clear if Harris was aware he was being pursued by police before the incident, which occurred not far from Harris’ home. It is also not clear if the officer was aware of Harris’ speech and hearing impairments.

For what it's worth, the victim was white. The race of the officer wasn't known.

Or any dash cam footage. Hopefully there are at least eye-witnesses so the officer's word isn't the only account of how things unfolded, particularly the fatal shooting.

policemen need body cams. Show me the video and we can decide if there was just cause for "deadly force".

I don't understand why there is no large police reforms. I hate that this family has to go through this senseless loss.

There are no larger reforms partly because a significant portion of the population makes police criminality into a race issue instead of an issue of justice and morality for all people.

The #alllivesmatter crew always pops up to silence BLM or criticize them even when BLM isn't the subject.

Why are you trying to divide the victims of police criminality against each other?

BLM gets nothing done because they don't play well with people who share similar goals. Be an advocate to stop police criminality or be an advocate for race based police reform and get nothing

and it needs to be resolved - regardless if there was an obvious crime committed or a routine stop. There are a number of folks out there who are hearing impaired (many cannot afford hearing aids or refuse them out of vanity), and moreso now that you have millions of vets out there who may have been exposed to excessive shelling noise - notably the Vietnam Vets who may not have had any hearing protection.
