Erdogan to Complain to U.S. Over Gulen Extradition Delay
Source: Bloomberg
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan plans to complain to U.S. Vice President Joe Biden about the delay in extraditing an Islamic cleric accused by Turkish authorities of masterminding last months failed coup.
The U.S. position on Fethullah Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, is overshadowing our strategic partnership, Erdogan said in televised comments on Sunday. Turkeys never asked from America to provide documents or proof on criminals that theyve wanted us to extradite -- weve given them the terrorists they wanted, he said.
Erdogans comments come a day after his Prime Minister Binali Yildirim warned that the Gulen issue was destroying bilateral ties with its NATO ally, as Turkish officials seek to increase the pressure ahead of Bidens visit to Turkey on Aug. 24. President Barack Obamas administration has said clear evidence of criminal activity is needed to satisfy U.S. due-process requirements as well as provisions of the U.S.-Turkey extradition treaty.
Turkey has jailed more than 20,000 suspects and removed almost 80,000 people from public duty after the July 15 coup attempt. More than 200 people were killed and thousands were wounded during the revolt, as troops fired on civilian protesters and clashed with police forces in Istanbul and Ankara, the capital. The government declared a three-month state of emergency.

(61,939 posts)When you're fighting a "war against terror," who needs evidence?
They're not even maintaining the pretense of legitimacy, and
that is disturbing.

It's both sad and telling that you trusted what another government says over the rights of your citizens or valued their help more than you valued your citizens. We, apparently, value your citizens' rights now more highly than you ever did. Nonetheless, your country said it would abide by the terms of the treaty, and if you don't want to abide by it, fine--it's your disgrace and dishonor that not only didn't you protect your own citizens but you call upon us to disrespect our laws in order to violate your citizen's rights."

Will Biden tell him the U.S. has intelligence revealing the truth about the "coup"? Will be interesting to see what happens after Biden leaves.
