Philippine President Duterte threatens to pull out of UN over criticisms against drug campaign

Source: German Press Agency

Manila (dpa) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday threatened to take his country out of the United Nations after it criticized his government's deadly campaign against illegal drugs.

Duterte accused the UN and its experts of interfering in the country's affairs by calling for an end to a spate of killings of drug suspects since he took office on June 30. "I do not want to insult you, but maybe we'll just have to decide to separate from the United Nations," Duterte said at a press conference in the southern city of Davao, where he was mayor before becoming president.

Duterte criticized the UN for failing to address hunger and terrorism as well as violence in Syria and Iraq. "You now, United Nations, if you can say one bad thing about me, I can give you 10 (about you)," he said. "Because if you are really true to your mandate, you could have stopped all these wars and killing."

More than 600 drug suspects have been killed since June 30, according to the police. Some counts by local media and human rights groups have placed the death toll as high as 1,000.

but the odd thing is that the Filipinos that I know in Canada are supportive of Duterte's crackdown on drugs, even though he's using it as an excuse to abuse his power in other ways. The Filipino people I'm referring to, by the way, are mostly health care workers and some of the most compassionate folks you'd ever meet. They know first hand that the problems with drugs in alcohol in their birthplace are dire, but I think they want the issue clean up without realizing the potential downsides of a dictatorial leader expanding his reach -- most are too young to recall the Marcos fiasco.

They support this measure. When I ask them about Duterte's comment that anybody can take the law into their own hands and not wait for the police to get involved. They just shrug.

Just wait until a family member of someone who's connected gets killed and see what happens.

IMHO this dude will send the Philippines backwards.

You have to look at it from a filipino perspective. Corruption and crime is some of the worst there in Asia. When people are desperate and the government cannot provide any effective alternatives, this is what happens.

About shooting black people and then sprinkling crack on them. A little baggie of drugs makes the blood wash so neatly from their hands.
