Pentagon to announce transfer of 15 Guantanamo inmates: Amnesty

Source: AFP

Washington (AFP) - The Pentagon will on Monday announce that 15 inmates have been transferred from the Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba, the largest such release in recent years, Amnesty International said.

If confirmed, the transfers would bring the number of detainees left at Guantanamo down to 61. The Pentagon declined to comment.

15 Guantanamo Detainees Sent to UAE in Major Transfer

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Aug 15, 2016, 6:04 PM ET

Fifteen prisoners at Guantanamo Bay have been released to the United Arab Emirates in the single largest transfer of detainees during the Obama administration.

The release of 12 Yemeni nationals and three Afghans comes amid a renewed push to whittle down the number of detainees held at the U.S. base in Cuba. The men have been cleared for transfer by U.S. government departments and agencies.

The Pentagon says 61 detainees remain at Guantanamo.

President Obama will have them all out of there by the time he leaves office. Since most prisoners have been tortured there is no way we can prosecute them, the only moral thing we can do is release them to countries willing to take them.
