NYPD releases sketch of suspect in shooting near Ozone Park mosque

Police are questioning an individual in connection to the shooting of an imam and an assistant in Queens on Saturday, a police source said Monday.

The suspect was taken into custody for an unrelated charge and has not been arrested or charged for the double homicide, the source said.

The shooting took place two blocks from a mosque in Ozone Park on Saturday. Maulama Akonjee, 55, an imam at the al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque, and Thara Uddin, 64, of Queens, who relatives said was Akonjee’s longtime friend but who some Muslim groups identified as his assistant, were killed. Both men wore religious garb as they walked. Both were shot in the head and rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.

Police said Sunday they were seeking additional video recordings in the area. They also released a sketch of the suspect.

5. That wouldn't surprise me. The picture looks rather like a cousin of mine who is not muslim
