Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump acknowledged on Thursday that his campaign was struggling in Utah, a usually rock-solid Republican state, in a sign that party loyalists were still divided over whether to support him.
Trump made the comment in urging conservative Christian evangelicals to organize support for him in several key states where the Nov. 8 election is likely to be decided, such as Ohio, Florida and Virginia.
It came on a rare day of self-reflection for the wealthy New York businessman, who has suffered a number of self-inflicted wounds in recent days that have given the advantage in the campaign to Democrat Hillary Clinton.
Were having a tremendous problem in Utah, Trump told a conference room filled with evangelical pastors, blaming a false narrative that has been built up around his candidacy. A SurveyUSA opinion poll conducted for the Salt Lake Tribune in June showed Clinton and Trump tied. Other polls have given Trump a lead but not the type of advantage that previous Republican nominees have enjoyed in the state.

kpete has entered the following OP, information that changes the entire "kinder and gentler Trump" slant (imo) of this Reuters article I posted, above, the OP:
Trump goes from bashing and insulting groups to taking on whole states.

(101,322 posts)But you dont have to take it from me. Listen to Mitt Romney, who said Trump fired before aiming when he decided a blanket religious ban was a solution to the threat of terrorism.
Listen to former Sen. Larry Pressler, who said Trumps plan reminded him of when Missouri Gov. Lilburn Boggs singled out Mormons in his infamous extermination order of 1838.
Or listen to your governor, who saw Trumps statement as a reminder of President Rutherford B. Hayes attempt to limit Mormon immigration to America in 1879.

(6,395 posts)...being "targeted". Much like the Dukabors, Molokans, Subotniki, Khlysty, etc. in Russia....or Jews and Christians in Iran...or Muslims in India, etc.
It may be today Muslims, but tomorrow, it could be "heretics". Sure they own Utah and parts of Idaho and Nevada...but that's it.

(25,862 posts)over the years I've known any number of Mormons. And although they, like all of us, have their flaws, marital fidelity is enormously important to them. So Trump's several marriages and his bragging about all the women who've wanted to sleep with him would no doubt be highly offensive to many in that state.

(16,191 posts)They're typically staunch Republicans, but NONE of them are Trump fans. Mormons tend to take their religion pretty seriously, and Trump's multiple marriages and the fact that he's a casino and gambling magnate (strictly prohibited in Mormonism), mean that every single one of them has expressed a disinterest in supporting him in the election. My uncle actually told me, "We survived eight years of Obama, and four years of Clinton can't be any worse than that."
Trump has turned off a HUGE number of traditional Republican voters. They aren't supporting Hillary, but many of them are willing to "put up with" a Clinton presidency rather than support Trump.

"Oh, I'm Sorry"
We know some Mormons in Utah who vote "D", thought they would be virtual enemies of the state. But their neighbors who were "R" treated them real well and vice versa. In fact one of them had a side clay dish sculpting business. We were interested in seeing it, but he was busy....so he told us to just walk into his house and take a look while he was gone.....that really freaked me out.

(16,191 posts)One of my grandparents converted to Mormonism decades ago and took a big chunk of the family with him. So long as we don't talk religion, the family gets along just fine.
And you know Mormon Democrats in Utah? Wow, rare birds indeed.
But yes, Mormonism teaches its followers to be kind at all times, which is why most Mormons are civil even when they disagree with you. One of the things I respect about Mormons is their ability to be civil even when you're disagreeing with them. It's part of their faith, and it's something that other Christian faiths would do well to emulate.

(2,657 posts)he was the CEO of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Committee. Don the Con's all out attack on him is, IMHO, a MAJOR factor in their dislike of him and his unprincipled line of bullshit.
