Man Charged With Fatal Shooting After 'Hoodlum' Complaint

A white man who apparently called police to complain about "hoodlums" near his house was charged with murder after he shot and killed a black man outside, authorities said.

The shooting happened early Sunday morning when 39-year-old Chad Cameron Copley fired a shotgun from inside his garage and hit the victim, according to a Raleigh Police Department news release. He was arrested hours later on a murder charge.

Kouren-Rodney Bernard Thomas, 20, suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan said Thomas was black.

Jail records show that Copley, who is white, was being held on a murder charge.

Shooting outside Raleigh home followed 911 call about ‘hoodlums’

Police said Copley was inside his garage at 3536 Singleleaf Lane, off Mitchell Mill Road, when he fired a shotgun, hitting Kouren-Rodney Bernard Thomas, 20, who was with a group outside his home.

Officers were dispatched just before 1 a.m., and Thomas was taken to WakeMed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Copley was charged with murder and was being held Sunday at the Wake County Detention Center.

In the first in a series of 911 calls released by police, a man tells a 911 operator at 12:50 a.m. that there’s an emergency on Singleleaf Lane. “We’ve got a bunch of hoodlums out here. I’m locked and loaded, and I’m going outside to secure my neighborhood. You need to send PD as quickly as possible.”

The caller continues: “I’m going to secure my neighborhood. I’m on neighborhood watch. I’m gonna have the neighbors with me. There’s hoodlums out here racing up and down the street. It’s 1 o’clock in the morning, um, there’s some vandalism. They have firearms, and we’re going to secure our neighborhood. If I were you, I’d send PD as quickly as possible.” The operator talks over the caller trying to clarify where things are happening.

She asks whether the man can provide an address or an intersection on Singleleaf. He replies: “Negative, ma’am. It’s in Raleigh, North Carolina. PD can work with that. Thank you.” Then the call is cut off.

Further down he claims it was a "warning shot". How you do that through a garage door with a 12 gauge shotgun I don't see.

Code for "hunt some blacks". He wouldn't even give the dispatcher the address. He was just going the motions of calling 911 so he could go shoot his prey and get away with it.

There was a guy that did that here in Texas. He was even filmed it on his phone. He kept saying "I fear for my life" as he APPROCHED the guy. He was convicted of murder and got 40 years. Then his conviction was overturned and he was retried. He got life the second time around.

We used to call this "looking for trouble".

This man is behind bars. There are thousands of idiots who think they can take the law into their own hands and they promote these crazy ideas among themselves. Most law enforcement experts advising civilians on the use of LETHAL FORCE, WARN civilians they should NEVER TAKE LETHAL FORCE LIGHTLY. In many states lethal force is a LAST RESORT and civilians are LEGALLY obligated to take EXHAUST ALL MEASURES before using lethal force, to flee from the situation and only when there is NO OTHER OPTION can they use lethal force to protect themselves. A party is going on two doors down and goers are racing up and down the street, arriving and leaving said party. TWO individuals parked on the street, hanging out by their parked car and COPLEY misconstrues this as "hoodlums" threatening his family/property. EVERYTHING Copley did and said is going to send him to jail. He wanted to play "Dirty Harry" and killed an innocent man who was only there to attend a party!
