Trump Peddles Slew Of Debunked Economic Claims In Detroit Speech
Source: Talking Points Memo
Donald Trump on Monday peddled largely uncontroversial Republican economic plans during a major policy address in Detroitbut he also pushed a slew of falsehoods about the health of the American economy.
During the subdued, buttoned-up address, which came on the heels of a long week of missteps for the campaign, Trump cast himself as the antidote to the job-killing economic policies of Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama.
He called for a moratorium on all new government regulations and railed against the federal tax code and the failure of international trade deals, much of which is well-traveled territory for Trump.
We need to stop believing in politicians and start believing in our great country, the nominee told the crowd. As President, Trump vowed to "jump-start America," noting, "It can be done, and it won't even be that hard." Trump also repeated his well-worn claim that the real unemployment rate is much higher than the Labor Department reports, which he framed as an intentional effort to spin the state of the U.S. economy in one of the biggest hoaxes in American modern politics.

Trump economic proposals fizzle with CNN expert: Just a speech to a room full of chairs
Washington Post reporter Ed OKeefe reacted to Republican nominee Donald Trumps economic speech on Monday by suggesting that the candidates proposals had been more about politics than policy.
In a speech at the Detroit Economic Club, Trump promised to bring prosperity to those who have the very least. Following the speech, OKeefe told CNN that the delivery of highly scripted teleprompter speech would help quell the concerns of many Republican lawmakers.
There was no discussion of minimum wage, no discussion of family leave, the correspondent said. But he gave Trump credit for proposing to make all child care tax deductible. Thats clearly an appeal to working women, OKeefe pointed out.
The correspondent also noted that Trump had been applauded for opposing trade deals even though Republicans members of the Detroit Economic Club traditionally favored free trade agreements.

(8,203 posts)Bullshit....
Now From Think Progress earlier -
Experts say that his plan will do nothing to help low- or even middle-income families, instead solely benefitting the rich who least need help affording child care.
Its absolutely regressive, said Helen Blank, director of childcare and early learning at the National Womens Law Center
But many low-income families dont owe anything in income taxes because they make too little and qualify for credits that reduce or erase their burdens. Currently, 35 percent of all people filing taxes dont have a liability come tax time, and Trump has said he wants to significantly expand that number.

(17,390 posts)A tax deduction is only beneficial for upper income, but not quite 1% families. If you are not in an upper income bracket, then a tax deduction is not nearly as helpful as a credit. A credit is beneficial to lower income families.
