Obama Takes Down Trump's Claim Of Rigged Election: 'That's Ridiculous'

Source: TPM

Donald Trump has begun warning that the November election will be "rigged" as his numbers collapses in national polls.

President Barack Obama said Thursday during a press conference that Trump doesn't know what he is talking about.

"What does that mean?" Obama said. "The federal government doesn't run the election process. States and cities and communities all across the country, they are the ones who set up the voting systems and the voting booths. And if Mr. Trump is suggesting that there is a conspiracy theory that is being propagated, across the country, included in places like Texas, where typically it's not Democrats who are in charge of voting booths, that's ridiculous."

Obama did say that he took cyber attacks on America's voting system and any attempt to intervene in the voting process seriously, but that assuming an election is going to be "rigged" is wrong.

I think that the election was rigged in 2000 and in 2004. And I think statewide, county and city elections are always at risk of being rigged. One way or another.

and there's no way to discover it since it's a part of the programming of the machines, particularly the central tabulators.

All it takes is a few lines of programming:

One line that says at a certain time all votes in column A will be counted as 1.03 and vote in column B will be counted as .97 (or whatever percentage you want)

The next line of programming will say, At such and such a time, delete this line and the previous line of programming.

Presto! It's done and it's the perfect crime. No evidence except for the paper ballots if there are paper ballots to recount and if the voting officials can be constrained or convinced to allow for an audit or recount. In other words, it's easy as pie to scam the system and hard as hell to discover the scam.

As for how the programming happens, there are as many ways as there are Arabian nights. The easiest I think is by avoiding the programming entirely and just changing the results directly by using the memory cards that are used to download the results to be transferred to the central tabulators. The memory cards can load executable code into the computer when they're inserted that will change the results on the print out and on the computer itself, whether it's a touch-screen or an opti-scan.

Many of us were deeply suspicious, especially in 2004 when we went to bed with a Kerry win and woke up to a Bush win. I think Trump's before the fact speculations are harmful and corrosive of trust in elections, but not entirely baseless, generally speaking.
