Syrian Arrests Are Said to Have Snared Tens of Thousands

Source: NYT

DAMASCUS, Syria — After Syrian secret police officers spotted Azam at a peaceful demonstration in the heart of this city, he said, they chased him down and dragged him off to prison, where he was tortured during his 40 days in confinement.

“They take people and forget them because there are so many others coming in,” said Azam, who asked to be identified by only his first name. He said he had been detained by air force security officers, members of one of more than a dozen secret police services in Syria.

While the world’s attention has been focused on the military escalation in Syria, the government has also waged an unrelenting campaign of arrests that has snared tens of thousands of people, according to lawyers and activists in Syria and human rights groups. They say the arrests have focused on two groups: secular activists, including those organizing humanitarian aid, and men and boys from the towns that the Syrian Army has besieged or has retaken from the armed opposition.

Those arrested, the lawyers and activists say, are dumped into a system devoid of meaningful judicial process or oversight, and are subject to torture.

The legitimate civil opposition are long dead or imprisoned, thanks to the intervention by regional and world powers that have escalated this into an armed religious conflict and proxy war.

I hope the Neocons are happy.

In his view, the armed opposition consists largely, even entirely of proxies/terrorists paid for by foreigners.

With all due respect, on the whole, this seems like a ludicrous assertion to me.

Could it be that not all conflicts in the world (or even in the mid-east) are due to the machinations of Neocons?

Assad and I probably agree that the earth revolves around the sun. But, that doesn't make us both wrong about everything, Al.

I am sure the Assad has many 'GITMOS' in Syria. Just as AMERICA also does around the World.

THIS IS ALL KNOWN FACT. GITMO CAN BE ANYWHERE. SEE THAT. IT IS.

NEW SECRET PRISONS ARE FOUND EVERYDAY. THIS IS FACT. WE KNOW, THE WORLD SEES IT, PEOPLE FIND THE PRISONS IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES EVERYDAY. IT WILL NEVER STOP, UNLESS IT IS STOPPED. PERIOD. JUST AS ASSAD MUST GO TO PRISON, SO MUST OTHERS.

OTHERWISE IT DOES NOT STOP. SIMPLE.

ARE YOU GOING TO BELIEVE THE ONES THAT CREATED THIS TO BEGIN WITH, THAT IT STOPPED? THEY WILL ALWAYS DECEIVE YOU. THEY HAVE BEFORE. THEY WILL AGAIN. THEY HAVE NO REASON TO SAY OR DO OTHERWISE UNLESS YOU MAKE THEM. JUST AS ASSAD WILL NEVER STOP ON HIS OWN. PERIOD. THAT IS NOT HOW THE WORLD WORKS. ANYWHERE...INCLUDING AMERICA. THIS IS THE WAY THAT THE WORLD REALLY WORKS. IT IS WHY THERE MUST BE JUSTICE.

BELIEVE EITHER THE WORLD AND HISTORY, OR BELEIVE WHAT YOU ARE TOLD TO BELIEVE. YOUR CHOICE.

YOU CAN ALREADY SEE WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO BELIEVE, AND IT DOES NOT MATCH REALITY.

PEOPLE NEED TO MAKE CHOICES. THEY ALSO BETTER THINK ABOUT WHY AMERICA'S GITMO IS STILL OPEN.

Meanwhile....The Progression continues....
