San Jose: Hundreds of court employees go on strike over wages

SAN JOSE -- Hundreds of picketers showed up outside the Hall of Justice as Santa Clara County court employees went on strike Wednesday over stalled contract negotiations, causing some offices to close and limiting service at others.
About 270 members of the Superior Court Professional Employees Association carried signs reading: "Justice for court workers," "Chop from the top" and "More work, less pay, no way," and chanting slogans such as "Balance the scales or the court will fail."
The effect of the court's first strike since 2002 was felt countywide in all 11 courthouses.
Lawyers have been seen arriving at the courthouse, only to turn around and leave because only arraignments and other time sensitive proceedings are being staffed. Even some trials have been suspended, including against a man accused of trying to ram a sheriff's deputy with his car.
