GOP reaches ‘new level of panic’ over Trump’s candidacy

Source: Washington Post

The Republican Party was in turmoil again Wednesday as party leaders, strategists and donors voiced increasing alarm about the flailing state of Donald Trump’s candidacy and fears that the presidential nominee was damaging the party with an extraordinary week of self-inflicted mistakes, gratuitous attacks and missed opportunities.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus was described as “very frustrated” and stressed by Trump’s behavior over the past week, having run out of excuses to make on the nominee’s behalf with donors and other party leaders, according to multiple people familiar with the events.

Meanwhile, Trump’s top campaign advisers are failing to instill discipline on their candidate, who has spent the past days lunging from one controversy to another while seemingly skipping chances to go on the offensive against his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

“A new level of panic hit the street,” said veteran operative Scott Reed, chief strategist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “It’s time for a serious reset.”

Let's assume the impossible, that he gets on message attacking Hillary, liberals, etc. He has shown who his is, and only those who've been living on Pluto haven't been exposed to it.

The Republicans need to stop trying to fix the unfixable Don, and decide the best course to fix an unfixable party.

...would likely write in his name or not vote at all--and the GOP needs those votes. Getting back the republicans they've lost probably won't be enough. Even if Trump says "I'm quitting and letting Ryan take my place, vote for him..." Well, it'll be a lot like the Busters. Many will say "Trump or nothing!" So, I'm not so sure a replacement, at this point, will beat Hllary. If such a replacement could have gotten everyday republicans and independents united behind him/her to do that, he/she would probably have been the nominee, not Trump.

Not, mind you, that we should take anything for granted, nor let up in getting voters to vote Democrat all the way. Let's keep going like a steam roller all the way, no matter what the RNC/Trump decides or does.

Wed Aug 3, 2016, 07:55 PM
Aug 2016

...of most of those.

Goal #1 is to maintain the movie version of himself that he's created. It's a tough, steak-eating, John-Wayne-as-General-Patton-benevolent-dictator fantasy. That's how he sees himself, and goal #1 is always to make sure everyone feeds that fantasy and makes it as real as possible. From sexy young obedient wives, to those he employs, to his fans, to his kids. They must all fawn over him, respect, obey, fear him and be able to psychically anticipate his wants/wishes and grant them. They must regard him with awe, and trust that what he wants done is alway right and best.

Included in this goal is that he must have enough money to maintain the lavish lifestyle (or buy whatever he wants). At the price he wants to pay--including, getting it all gratis.

So. That's goal #1 and that's always his primary goal. If running for President is getting him all that--and so far it has been getting him all that, in spades!--then he'll continue on. Sure, he doesn't like the criticism, the media disrespecting him, nor the idea of having to do debates. But he's been riding so high on all of this that he likely thinks he's going to snap back to that high point. That this is just a temporary dip.

Goal #2 is to do what needs doing to maintain Goal #1--that means scamming and using people. In this case, credulous voters and the RNC. These are his personal (1) Piggy-bank, (2) Secret-police and fan club--ready to beat up nay sayers, tweet, troll, etc. all for him. And he's using the same scam he always uses to create such piggy-banks/social-media-fan-clubs. That he's got secret knowledge of how things really work, and that he alone can fix them. He'll use that and use them till the well runs dry.

The presidency is not a game. It's a scam. And win or lose, it's just another well to pump dry for his own benefit. That is always goal #1. What well can he tap to keep up his fantasy of who he is and what he deserves. He wouldn't mind at all playing at president. Because he doesn't know that being president won't give him all that. He thinks there are ways that it will...and frankly, he's not wrong. Look at our history, teapot dome scandals made presidents rich, and communist witch hunts jailed their critics and made people afraid to criticize. J.Edgar Hoover's FBI kept tabs on enemies. He could maintain this fantasy of himself, all of it, by being president.

That, at least, is how I read him.

52. Just to add, consider what a coup the presidency would be to man like Trump...
Wed Aug 3, 2016, 08:36 PM
Aug 2016

It's the ultimate scam! The taxpayers pay for everything!

He and his family get to live at the White House, with everyone at their beck and call, all on the taxpayer's dollar. His wife can even redecorate--on the taxpayer's dollar. He gets to fly anywhere in the world on the taxpayers dollar. He and his family get to hang at Camp David and take vacations, on taxpayers dollar. He gets to send the military where he wants, on taxpayer's dollar. Gets security and soldiers guarding him, on taxpayer's dollar. And, icing on the cake, gets called "Mr. President," gets fanfare whenever he enters, standing ovations, and to be on every news channel wherever he likes.

As for any work, his cabinet till do all that--and, again, the taxpayers will pay for it all.

AND he'll have influence that he can sell. Want favored nation status? What will you pay for that? Subsidies? What will you pay for that? A Purple Heart? A pardon? What will you pay for that?

Being president doesn't merely make real his fantasy how the great man he is should be regarded and treated...it gives him one of the best scams he'll ever be able to run. To bilk American taxpayers. Republicans have been doing it for decades, with George W. as the latest and greatest. That, I believe, is Trump's long-term goal.

He is so out of bounds on everything, way past questionable on the
dictatorship meter, answers to no one, and he is being nudged aside
by the rational people in government and media.

Intervention is not going to make Trump's problems go away.

Making Trump go away is not going to repair the damage he has
done to the Republican Party

He is their creation. He is their ideology, fully grown up and in plain view.

He is getting more and more like good old Adolph. Trump apparently thinks he is godlike- that's why he wears his hair like he does. Hitler also thought he was a god and was sure that when he died he would be brought to heaven and installed as one of the divine. I heard someone say that trump keeps Hitler's speeches by his bed: now I'm beginning to think this true! I think he will commit suicide bigtime when he loses. He has nothing to go back to - being a mere mortal just doesn't cut it for him.

Caesar took Gaul, crossed the English channel and did lots of other 'history stuff' that still has us talking about him 2000 year later. Does not hurt that a playwright who was the inventor of the modern English language wrote a cool play about him in the 1500's..

But it is really not cool to compare Trump to Caesar.

Although now that I type this, perhaps I totally missed your point. Caesar coming to power did end the Republic.

Have a great evening.

But they hitched their wagon to the racist in 64 and now that part of the party has taken control.

It is going to be interesting to watch how things shake out. It has been 170 years since we have had a major party collapse and a new one come into being. I do not think that will happen and there will always be a republican party, but it will be very different than it was in 2000.
