Donald Trump Faults GOP for Poor Convention Ratings

Last edited Fri Jul 29, 2016, 02:10 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: Mother Jones

Donald Trump is suddenly distancing himself from last week's Republican National Convention, after television ratings show that the Democratic National Convention consistently pulled in more viewers across the country for three consecutive nights.

"I didn't produce our show," Trump told the New York Times. "I just showed up for the final speech."

While the ratings for the fourth night have yet to be announced, Trump did appear anxious that Clinton's final convention night on Thursday would top his own. Earlier that morning, the Republican nominee sent a campaign letter to his supporters urging them not to tune in.

The ratings loss is likely to be a particularly sensitive topic for Trump. The reality star has long boasted of being a ratings bonanza, with viewers flocking to witness his unpredictable, inflammatory performances throughout the primary debate season. Trump's presence in the debates created record-breaking numbers for television networks.

A better one. This I can say. Much much better, believe me.

Trump used his star power to get lots of A-list politicos and celebs and sports figures and musicians to his show, like Tim Tebow (oh, wait).

The R National Committee agreed that Trump was organizing it:

"Donald Trump and his campaign know how to put on a show," Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said on "Fox News Sunday." {...} Trump promised a “winner’s night” and A-list celebrities. -- http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-republican-convention-20160718-snap-story.html

From speaking slots to prime-time moments reserved for himself, the television celebrity and Manhattan billionaire is dealing directly in the details of his coronation as Republican nominee to maximize the drama and spectacle of the party’s four-night convention.

“This is the part of politics he would naturally enjoy, and he wants to control it 100 percent,” said a high-level Trump campaign source. “This is a massive television production, and he is a television star.”

Indeed, Trump is viewing the convention as a showcase for the brand he built in entertainment over three decades and then melded with a political persona developed over the past year. {...}

Trump’s ongoing conversations with House Speaker Paul Ryan, who is set to serve as convention chairman despite having yet to officially endorse the likely nominee, are also expected to focus increasingly on the show in Cleveland in July, which Trump is intent on controlling.

“If he wants control and to pick the speakers, then it’s going to be awkward, disjointed and an ugly convention,” said another operative working with Trump’s campaign. “This will not be the opportunity for people who have a contrarian view to come to the convention and start a fight.” -- http://www.politico.com/story/2016/05/donald-trumps-gold-plated-convention-223309

Donald Trump's blaming the Republican Party for the poor organization of the Republican Convention could be made into multiple ads. All of them could ask the American people if they really want Donald Trump as President of the United States. If Trump cannot make sure his convention goes in the right direction how can he make America go in the right direction? If he could not control his own convention how can he run a country? Do you really want a guy, as President, who does not take responsibility for his actions? Even if Trump tries to claim Hillary Clinton should not get credit for the DNC convention going well because the convention only shows that the DNC is more organized than the GOP that still looks bad for him. Do you really want a guy from a party that could not run a four day convention running the country? If Trump could not fix his own party how is he going to fix America?
