Turkey coup attempt: Detentions 'tip of the iceberg'

Source: BBC

Turkey's deputy prime minister has described as "the tip of the iceberg" the infiltration of state institutions by the group the government blames for last Friday's failed coup.

Nurettin Canikli told the BBC that the number of arrests could grow
.
At least 60,000 state employees have been detained or suspended in an internationally criticised purge.

But Mr Canikli criticised Turkey's allies for "only half-heartedly" condemning the "coup-makers".

On one hand Erdogan is an asshole but on the other we need Turkey as a bulwark against Russia. Very unpleasant situation.

But really, 60,000? What kind of a conspiracy can have 60,000 people in on it?

Second tier would be facilitators. They didn't plot, but when the coup was unfolding took steps to actively help it beyond just "doing their jobs." It's one thing to help it, another to fail to resist.

This is going third-tier, those who didn't actively resist, who might have sympathized given half a chance. Or are suspected of being possible sympathizers.

The authoritarian urge to purge. Right or left, atheist or religious, internationalist or nationalist, there it is.
