Dem posts photo of racially diverse interns after Ryan selfie controversy
Source: The Hill
Democrats on Wednesday responded to a selfie taken by Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) with the latest batch of Republican Capitol Hill interns that was widely criticized for its lack of diversity.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) tweeted out a photo of her partys racially diverse 2016 interns, organized and taken by Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas) and her staff.
The Instagram post from Ryan earlier this week quickly earned the ire of both lawmakers and voters, with many calling attention to the overwhelming number of white faces in the photo.
"Speaker Ryan, in this day & age, theres no excuse for not having diverse staff & interns, tweeted Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.).

...granted, the racist rhetoric and actions of the party may not make it appealing to people of color (or other than Christian, come to that), but it's only racism on republican's part if diverse people applied for jobs and were refused. If all those in the Ryan pic are the ones who applied for such jobs, then what the two pictures say is which party appeals to whom--who is willing to work for which party.

(54,020 posts)Republicans don't appeal to those who believe in an inclusive society. The fact that the Republican interns are 97% white in a country that's 70% white (and with a young generation that's closer to 60% white) isn't the problem in and of itself, but it is a symptom of the problem--namely conservative disdain for equal opportunity.

What specifically leads you to believe a noticing a lack of diversity is in itself, racism, and on what objective evidence is that measured?

(37,748 posts)You are speaking of this as though it's absolute. Do you have objective evidence to support your allegation? Or (and I'm beginning to find this more plausible) you read it on a t-shirt and it sounded clever?
(Before you go on, you may want to find the academic and objective definitions of bigotry and racism then compare and contrast the two...)

Says nothing about merely noticing that an all-white cast is in itself, racist. Your rationalizations are lacking objective evidence, merely allegations and unsupported claims. You will of course, supply objective evidence to support your allegations, yes?

(23,420 posts)I would expect that the staffers would demographically match their party's voters.
Now, as to why the Republican voters are not more ethnically diverse - I consider that a researchable question.

(54,020 posts)So the Ryan photo isn't of a representative sample from all the Congressional interns, only of the ones that cared to pose with the highly partisan Republican speaker. Khalaf's point that minorities don't get access to internships--hence, the Ryan selfie--looks pretty stupid when you compare it to the very diverse assembly of Democratic interns that Lee posted. Minorities in large numbers do get internships... as long as they're applying to Democratic members
