Putin steps in and orders speed up in build of World Cup stadia
Source: Inside World Football
Russian President Vladimir Putin has mandated officials in St. Petersburg to speed up construction of the citys new stadium that has been earmarked as a key 2018 World Cup venue.
Putin said the stadium provisionally named Zenit Arena must be built on time as he ordered officials to adopt comprehensive measures to eliminate the gaps in the stadiums construction scheduling. Putin also gave similar instructions to local authorities in Samara and Kaliningrad where two other World Cup grounds are being built.
The stadium in Russias second-largest city has been in construction for almost a decade, and St. Petersburg City Hall announced last Friday it had fired the general contractor over alleged cost overruns and delays. The venue is set to cost over US$620m.
Although FIFA has issued statements to the contrary, the Zenit Arena wont be finished in time for the Confederations Cup unless it is completed by December, according to Interfax, citing World Cup committee chairman Vadim Tyulpanov.

What a disaster to give fascist Russia the Olympics and then the World Cup. But FIFA is totally corrupt so it figures.

"In fact, the Russian press, often keen to put a positive spin on the country's exploits, could not hide its disdain.
A "disgrace" and a "humiliation" is how football pundit Valery Reingold described the team's performance in Izvestia newspaper.
Former player Aleksandr Bubnov called Russia "the weakest team at the Euros," adding: "Two years before hosting the World Cup, the only thing we have right now is total confusion. There is no coach, no leader in the team, not even a defined skeleton of a future team."
Kommersant observes that during the Wales game, "Russian fans - at first so sunny and cheerful - stopped looking at the field and started looking over their shoulder, trying to figure out how to leave the stadium as quickly as possible"."
lol I sure hope they are NOT using drugs, I would hate to think performance enhancing drugs were so ineffective.

Russia is not permitted to field a team for anything but exhibition play.
I imagine foreigners in town for the games would not be welcome by a lot of local soccer hooligans.

(2,208 posts)Thank you for posting a nice article on Russia putting the extra effort into completing stadiums for the World Cup.
Honestly, I am pleasantly surprised.
I must admit, that in the past I felt that you would post ANY article about Putin or Russia just as an excuse to add a rant orr nasty comment at the end of it. I am glad to see that I was proven wrong by this example.
Oh, wait... you DID add a comment... what did it say again?
"What a disaster to give fascist Russia the Olympics and then the World Cup"
Sigh. You went and resorted to form. I guess that is to be expected.
