CNNs Chris Cuomo on Wednesday subjected Donald Trumps campaign manager to an extended grilling for steadfastly denying that part of Melania Trumps speech at the Republican National Convention was plagiarized.
Some of those words came from Michelle Obama's speech in 2008, Cuomo told Paul Manafort, who said on Tuesday that Trump's wife simply used "common words" in her speech. You have every kind of expert and anybody with eyes who sees that, you keep ignoring it. I don't understand why. I don't understand why you keep making this an issue.
Because it is a speech that she gave, talking about her feelings. She is not a candidate for office, Manafort replied, pivoting to discuss how Donald Trump won the Republican presidential nomination despite all the conventional wisdom.
That's the story, he insisted.
Cuomo wasnt having it.
You're distracting from the story line by refusing to acknowledge something that's true, and it plays into two issues, he said. Cuomo argued that the campaign's refusal to admit that part of the speech was plagiarized undercut their message that Hillary Clinton was too untrustworthy to serve as president, and spoke to the campaigns pattern of denial when faced with any conflict. ....................

(11,519 posts)Someone (Melania, her speechwriters, one of the advisers) absolutely and totally blew it. And the fact that CNN is raising hell about this is telling too, their audience is likely to be the independent voter who rRump will sorely need.

(396 posts)Rat-fucking, whatever. That's the conclusion I came to as well, as soon as I read that the last lines of her speech were from rickroll. That combined w/ the fact the copied speech was from none other than Michelle Obama.
Or perhaps it was a clue from the scampaign that it really is a joke, but that seems a bit intelligent for that crew.
Someone took advantage of an esl woman to majorly bring down The Pretenders.
If whoever did it lives to tell about it, he/she is to be congratulated. Good work!

I have not seen her speech.

(396 posts)She did. The Trumps were rickrolled in the most brilliant manner ever. So brilliant that the press has been rickrolled right along w/ them.
Can it possibly get any better?

"I have seen him fight for years to get a project done or even started and he does not give up! If you want someone to fight for you and your country, I can assure you, he is the 'guy'. He will never, ever, give up. And, most importantly, he will never, ever, let you down. "

Of all the phrases in the world, how have they landed on these? Yes, some could be considered semi generic, but "my word is my bond" is not. I don't think so.

(1,945 posts)especially after the farce of the Republican primary coverage they gave.
Their corporate owners/managers have made their support staff so thread bare that they can't or won't vet a standard guest as they interview them. It's amazing to see Cuomo prepared enough to interview and fact check in the same conversation. What next?
Are they going to discuss qualifications for office?

(162 posts)for giving a speech that was remarkably similar to one that Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick gave.
I'm not 100% certain that these people are cognizant of what they're doing. We all hear catchy phrases all day long; some of them stick with us. Sometime later, they come back to us, but we can't remember where we heard them. Nevertheless, we repeat them. That's how language spreads - repetition and mimicry.
In poor Ms. Trumps case, however, I'd agree that she was set up. When the source is someone as auspicious and accomplished as Michelle Obama is quoted, someone is surely going to take notice.

(14,308 posts)I'm not used to making or creating a speech, especially in English which is not my first or even second language. There was confusion between me and the speechwriters. I didn't mean to take part of Michelle's speech and apologizes to Michelle for it.
I'm embarrassed. I hope people don't hold my confusion against the rest of my family.
End of story. She looks sympathetic.

It's akin to that thing where the more evidence that disproves a notion, the more true believers... who ignore said evidence and believe the notion even harder... are all the more revered. Just like religion.

(162 posts)It's surreal to see this campaign manager sit there lying through his teeth. He knows he's lying. We know that he knows that he's lying. He knows that we know that he knows that he's lying. Everybody knows that he's lying.
Just come clean. You'd probably get a pass from most reasonable people anyway.

(15,222 posts)It's also time for journalists to tell some of the Trump surrogates to "shut up" when said Trump surrogate talks over differing opinions. I've noticed that is the normal strategy for most Trump surrogates. Just keep talking so no one else can get a word in edgewise, interrupt, and talk over to the point that others' voices cannot be heard.
I don't generally approve of the use of language such as "shut up", but when you are dealing with cretins, sometimes you have to use language that they understand.

(47,487 posts)I just read - perhaps has been posted here - that in the middle of the talk by the mother of one of the Benghazi's victims, Trump called Orally on the phone and poor Fox had to switch from the cover of the talk to the phone exchange.

But now it keeps shining a light on Trump campaign lying and lack of leadership. Amateur from top to bottom.
It is so telling that the section plagiarized is about honesty and integrity and "your word is your bond".

Doesn't mean "we the people" don't have standards!
Here is a Republican National Convention where the most prominent Republicans can only regurgitate, "Well - Hillary's worse!"
I do believe we'll win that argument!

.part of the story. Melania didn't crib from some random essay. She stole from the wife of the Not Born in This Country Socialist Muslim OtherMichele Obama.
It was stolen from the very epitome of everything Trump is rapidly campaigning against. So it's not just about plagiarismit's about stealing from the very people you are whipping your followers into a frenzy about.
The ironies are beyond all bounds.

I wonder what else they will need to steal from the Obama's to accomplish anything? Do you really want to vote for a cheat and a liar? The only policy discussion you can expect with someone who thinks 24 x 9 about themselves is what policies are good for or affect them.
This _IS_ an in depth discussion of policies with the real estate swindler. Does that tell you how shallow it is?

(1,254 posts)That is still NO EXCUSE. The GOP and Trump campaign tried to pull a CON over on American Voters, PURE AND SIMPLE. That is what is so OUTRAGEOUS about this debacle. They got caught and then tried to cover it up. They tried to pawn part of a speech off that belonged to Michelle Obama. A speech reflecting HER VALUES and the GOP would have us BELIEVE these were Trump's. That is very LOW. She had the nerve and STUPIDITY to almost copy it VERBATIM. What GALL! If she hadn't got caught, the GOP would be congratulating the Trump campaign for THEFT!
