Texas Lt. Governor Says AG Should Investigate Black Lives Matter

Source: Talking Points Memo

During a Tuesday interview on CNN, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) said that he would "absolutely" want the attorney general to investigate the Black Lives Matter movement. He said he agreed with Donald Trump's Monday night comments on Fox News, when the Republican candidate said that he would discuss the group with his attorney general if elected president.

Patrick has been critical of the Black Lives Matter movement, earlier this month blaming the deadly shooting of police officers in Dallas on anti-police rhetoric and Black Lives Matter protests. And he was critical again on Tuesday.

"We know we have a distrust in the black community of police. We know that there are some police officers who need to be replaced. And police forces want to remove those people as well," Patrick said on CNN. "But before we can sit down at a table and have unity, we have to stop having protesters chanting 'Kill the cops.'"

He then launched into bashing President Obama, who he confronted at a town hall last week, telling Obama that he does not fully support the police. "The President has to speak out against that and the President needs to stop inviting people to the White House who say they want to kill cops," Patrick said Tuesday, not specifying what White House guest he was referring to.

... who are upset by their folks being killed by the police?

These people really are crazy and they live in another world all together. Just like those people
at the RNC chanting "lock her up, lock her up" about Hillary because my question is what are
you going to lock Hillary up for? She was cleared on all charges.

When the nation’s top cop must warn his children to be skeptical of his own troops, how legitimate can the police actually be?

And it is not as if Holder is imagining things. When the law shoots down 12-year-old children, or beats down old women on traffic islands, or chokes people to death over cigarettes; when the law shoots people over compact discs, traffic stops, drivers’ licenses, loud conversation, or car trouble; when the law auctions off its monopoly on lethal violence to bemused civilians, when these civilians then kill, and when their victims are mocked in their death throes; when people stand up to defend police as officers of the state, and when these defenders are killed by these very same officers; when much of this is recorded, uploaded, live-streamed, tweeted, and broadcast; and when government seems powerless, or unwilling, to stop any of it, then it ceases, in the eyes of citizens, to be any sort of respectable law at all. It simply becomes “force.”

In the black community, it’s the force they deploy, and not any higher American ideal, that gives police their power. This is obviously dangerous for those who are policed. Less appreciated is the danger illegitimacy ultimately poses to those who must do the policing. For if the law represents nothing but the greatest force, then it really is indistinguishable from any other street gang. And if the law is nothing but a gang, then it is certain that someone will resort to the kind of justice typically meted out to all other powers in the street.

I can't think of a more loathsome dog whistle to Trump racists.
