Turkey bans academics from work trips abroad
Source: AFP
Turkey's higher education council has banned academics from work trips abroad and urged those overseas to quickly return home, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Wednesday.
Turkey has widened its massive post-coup purge from the military and police to the education sector to root out supporters of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom it accuses of orchestrating the attempted putsch.
The council asked university rectors to "urgently examine the situation of all academic and administrative personnel linked with FETO" -- or the "Fethullah Terrorist Organisation", as it labels Gulen's supporters -- and report back by August 5.
It also told universities that academics who are already abroad on work or study missions should return home "within the shortest possible time".

Erdogan has hated the academics ever since they supported the student-protests for more freedoms.

(3,967 posts)That is meant as a loyalty test. Those who are worried about what could happen to them in turkey might be assumed to be the same as those who don't return home. Kind of like seeing if a witch sinks or floats. I recommend extending those sabbaticals.
Boycott Turkey!

I was pulling for the coup from the beginning and did not understand why Obama spoke in support of Erodgan. Democratically elected officials can morph into undemocratic rulers, as we've witnessed.

(2,208 posts)Turkey is not only a NATO member, but it has the second largest military in NATO, after the US.
NATO's statement of purpose includes this:
"NATO strives to secure a lasting peace in Europe, based on common values of individual liberty, democracy, human rights and the rule of law."
Hmmmm, and what does NATO have to say about this MASSIVE and continuing purge in Turkey now?
Yesterday's warnings that maybe possibly perhaps Turkey might could be may be "suspended" seem, what, totally inadequate?
