First Half of 2016 Blows Away Temperature Records
Source: Scientific American/Climate Central
The first half of 2016 has blown away temperature records, capped off by a record hot June, once again bumping up the odds that 2016 will be the hottest year on record globally, according to data released Tuesday.
The monthly numbers from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration puts the planet on track to surpass 2015 as the hottest on record.
2016 has really blown that out of the water, Gavin Schmidt, the director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said.

(8,559 posts)...comes screeching to a halt one day due to the introduction of so much fresh water from the melting poles, we may see a sudden flipping of the global climate switch ushering in a new ice age. The network of Earth's ocean currents serve as a very important heat exchanger which is thought to be essential to a stable temperate climate.
Out of the frying pan and into the deep freeze.
While Shakespeare he clearly ain't, Benjamin the Donkey pretty well captures my sentiments here:

(19,253 posts)We've pushed the planet's thermostat so far off the norm, it now looks like even a shutdown of the Thermohaline Cycle will only slow warming, not reverse it:

The farmers are praying for dry conditions.
We spent the last 15 years in drought.
The problem with climate change isn't necessarily that the weather is getting hotter, it's getting stranger.

In 50 years, the area I live in, is supposed to be completely uninhabitable.

Seriously, Saudi Arabia is flooding the world with cheap oil to make as much money as they can now because in 20-25 years the entire world will realize we have to stop burning fossil fuels.

(171,070 posts)and I'm hardly getting any rain at all, which is also bizarro for the middle of summer.

(1,333 posts)Its has rained about 3 days in a week now dropping the typically hot summer temps and alleviating our drought problem. I think it has rained more this season than in any summer I have ever witnessed. Not complaining about the weather here.

(14,910 posts)We haven't had a considerable rainfall, save a few torrential thunderstorms that merely runoff rather than soak and refresh the water table.
We've had several 90° + days with more on the way where we generally only receive a small handful a season.
We don't dare have an outdoor fire in the weekends for fear of starting a grass or brush fire, which have become more and more common lately. There have been at least half a dozen since June 21st.
We could use the relief!
P.S. send rain!

(23,105 posts)This winter was the warmest ever, we had azaleas blooming in Dec. December, for goddess' sake! Earlier this month, we had 2 weeks of daily temps. of over 100, 2 full weeks! After getting up to 103 during the day, it was 98 degrees at 9pm. Brutal! I've lived in No. FL. for 45 years, 52-70 and 89-now. I've never seen weather like this before, it's so much hotter than usual.

(191 posts)Someone would have to be an idiot to think that the climate isn't changing. Something needs to be done or we could be facing widespread famines if crops keep getting destroyed year after year.
