Turkish navy ships still missing since attempted coup as it remains unclear which side admirals are on
Several Turkish navy ships are still unaccounted for, their commanders suspected to be among the plotters who sought to overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Admiral Veysel Kosele, the commander of the Turkish navy, has not been heard from since the failed coup on Friday, a source told The Times.
It is currently unknown whether he was part of the coup or was tricked on to the boat after coup plotters told him there was a terrorist attack and then taken hostage, local media reports suggested.

(2,208 posts)Uh huh. Sure. I buy that.
Admiral Veysel Kosele, the commander of the Turkish navy was tricked onto the boat.
It's definitely NOT a desperate face saving attempt for the Admiral, or now that I think about it, Erdogan. I mean it would look REALLY BAD for Erdogan if the commander of the Turkish Navy was exposed as a coup plotter, better that gets swept under the rug, no?
Erdogan can't afford to piss off the Turkish military TOO much, it's safer for him to arrest judges and school teachers.

(29,876 posts)Turkeys navy is still unable to account for 14 ships, while two helicopters with 25 special forces troops are also missing since an unsuccessful coup plot against the government. However, Deputy PM Numan Kurtulmus has denied any naval vessels are unaccounted for.
With suspicions growing that the commanders of the vessels could have been behind a coup plot against the Turkish government and are now seeking asylum at Greek ports.
The ships were on duty in either the Aegean or the Black Seas on Friday before the coup to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan took place. However, they have failed to return to port, though in theory radar and satellite tracking technology should be able to determine their locations, according to a report in the Times newspaper.
It is believed that the ships could be heading towards Greek ports.
The Turkish deputy prime minister, Numan Kurtulmus, has dismissed reports that any naval vessels have gone missing. However, he did not give any further details as to their current location.

(14,779 posts)Most Pontic Greeks were either killed or expelled from the Black Sea Coast of Modern Turkey during or after WWI, but many survive in various communities in the former Soviet Union. President Erdogan himself is of Pontic Greek Decent (many such Pontic Greek officially converted to Islam in the 1700s but as the when most of the laws that forced such conversions were abolished in the 1800s, converted back to Greek Orthodox but others remain Moslem and fully embraced being Turkish).
Thus you have Pontic Greek Populations in Odessa and the Crimea as while as Armenia and Georgia.

As to Erdogan, remember the old rule, they are none or devote and the converted and that best explain Erdogan embrace of Turkish nationality and Islam.
Seriously, The Turkish Black Sea Fleet could sail to Odessa and come under Ukrainian Control, Sevastopol and come under Russian Control, or even Georgia or Romania, all border the Black Sea. Thus the fleet have options, but the best option to sail home and tell everyone they were out at sea during the coup and had no part in it.
