A man armed with an axe has attacked around 20 passengers on a train in northern Bavaria, according to local police.
Three people were seriously injured and one person sustained lightinjuries before the attacker was shot by police, a police spokesperson told local newspaper Main Post.
According to Bavarias interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, the attacker was a 17-year-old Afghan citizen.
The man reportedly attacked passengers on a regional train travelling between the town of Treuchtlingen and the city of Würzburg.

More than 20 people in Germany have received medical treatment after a man with an axe and a knife went on the rampage on a train, German media say.
They include three seriously injured people, one with minor injuries and 14 who are in shock.
A police operation is under way in Heidingsfeld, part of the city of Wurzburg in Germany.
A police spokesman at the scene said (in German) that the attacker was shot dead while fleeing. A journalist with the national broadcaster ZDF tweeted that the attacker was a 17-year-old Afghan man.

The rifles like the AK are not going away. There are millions from the Balkan wars circulating in europe. That's why the black market price of an AK in europe is only 300 euros (and 700 for an RPG, btw)
http://www.havocscope.com/weapon-sales-in-the-european-union/
And there are millions more coming onto the european market in the future because Russia is buying a new battle rifle.

(8,303 posts)What's really cool about it is that in Brussels and parts of France (I have even seen this in Germany), the custom is for the soldiers/police to go masked, so that they and their families won't be targeted.
Given the garb and the masks, it would be relatively easy for a bunch of non police to suit up and head on out to cause carnage. People are getting used to seeing this, and it wouldn't cause a reaction initially.
Calista241
(5,586 posts)but I have never, ever seen one. And I live in Georgia, which is a VERY gun friendly state. I live within just a mile of a very popular gun range / gun store, and I've never seen anyone but the police walking around with a firearm in a holster.
I just don't perceive this to be the widespread, civilization ending problem that a lot of people here seem to think it is.

(5,586 posts)Doesn't mean I think it's a giant problem. There's what, 20,000 people out of 320 million here in America that feel a need to carry around rifles? That's not a giant problem in my view.
Angel Martin
(942 posts)and to make a point
constantly carrying what amounts to a 8-10 pound 35 inch tube gets old pretty quickly. It's nuisance enough while hunting, let-alone 24/7.

(942 posts)I don't personally want to carry. Even a compact 9mm is a bloody nuisance to be carrying all the time, let alone a 10 pound rifle. I'm fortunate to split my time between what are currently two relatively safe cities, and would not want to carry unless public safety significantly deteriorates, or there was a specific personal threat.
But it does appear that the frequency of mass attacks is accelerating and any place where people gather is a target. Police or armed security can't be everywhere. The more properly trained concealed carriers there are, the more every target is hardened.

(6,241 posts)for speech that's not threatening to people. If you don't like something someone says, counter it with your own views. But to arrest and imprison someone because of it shows that you have no counter, an you want to shut someone up. Think gulags. Think reeducation camps. That's not democracy. That's not civil society.

There was an odd situation not too long ago in Germany: a guy who was probably nuts and was described as speaking poor German took a bunch of hostages in a movie theater. He got shot by a special team - it turned out his gun was not the real thing.

(3,967 posts)BERLIN -- German officials said one person was killed and several wounded in a stabbing attack at a train station near Munich early Tuesday morning.
The suspect was reportedly heard shouting Allahu Akbar (God is great) before or during the attack, according to witnesses, but authorities later appeared to rule out an Islamic extremist motive.

Bavarian regional prosecutor Erik Ohlenschlager said the boy was a devout Muslim and wanted to get revenge on "infidels" who had harmed his Muslim friends. He accepted that his own death was a possibility.
Mr Ohlenschlager said the attack was "definitely politically motivated".
But Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said there was no indication the teenager had direct contact with IS.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-36837109
Lothar Köhler, the director of the Bavarian investigations office, said he understood the text to be a farewell letter to the teenagers father, in which he complained about nonbelievers. In one key passage, he wrote: Now pray for me that I can take revenge on these nonbelievers, and pray for me, that I make my way into heaven.
...
The teenager had found out on Friday or Saturday that a close friend of his had died in Afghanistan, Köhler said an event that may have played a role in his radicalisation. Witnesses said the 17-year-old had spent a lot of time on the phone after being informed of his friends death. A mobile phone that the attacker discarded while on the run has since been recovered.
The Bavarian interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, said the notebook entry was a strong indicator that the teenager could be a person who had been self-radicalised. At the same time, Herrmann said, there was no evidence that the attack had been organised or coordinated directly by Isis. There are currently no indicators of the young man being part of the Islamist militias network.
