Turkey's state-run news agency says seven prosecutors, charged with investigating a foiled coup, have entered a base in southern Turkey that is key to the U.S.-led campaign against the Islamic State group.
Anadolu Agency says the prosecutors, accompanied by police, entered Incirlik Air Base on Monday.
A Turkish brigadier general at the base has already been detained for his alleged role in Friday's uprising.
News reports say refueling aircraft that took off from the base helped keep F-16s used by the coup-plotters up in the air.

(26,319 posts)I think the various "coup" elements were just sick of Erdogan's dictatorial-like governing.
and I think Erdogan was sick of having to listen to critics of his dictatorial-like style of governing.
I believe what we will see is more strengthening of Erdogan's position and more restrictions upon the nations freedoms.
I don't think this the end of this, though, I suspect something else is looming in the future that won't be as easily put down next time.

(26,319 posts)Of course that could mean the US might pull out of Turkey soon followed by Turkey being expelled from NATO which Erdogan might not care about now but he might care soon enough because Russia might then see Turkey as a very tempting ripe fruit ready to be picked as it would give Russia total control over shipping that enters and leaves the Black Sea.

(62,534 posts)Turkey would certainly offer a very temping target.
I think what would happen if Turkey was kicked out of NATO would be Russia would suddenly buddy up to Erdogan and start sending all sorts of "aid".
And I think it would happen very quickly.
Russia is still tied up else where to start military action in Turkey. I think they would be perfectly fine if Turkey started dancing Moscow's tune.

(26,319 posts)make an offer to the Ukraine that they will cease providing support for the "rebels" and in exchange the Ukrainian government deeds them the entire Crimean Peninsula at which point they then start building up for an invasion of Turkey and they dont even need to take the entire country they just need to secure the area connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean and fortify it.

(62,534 posts)given that Erdogen and putin have a lot in common on the human rights front.
I don't think it would take a whole lot for Turkey to take Russian aid.

(26,319 posts)its fiddle for Turkey? They very well could just decide they want to reap the profits all for themselves by controlling the shipping in the Black Sea and the best way to do that is to to control who can go in and out.

That the purge is on-going is a problem. Not one I have any influence over, but I can opine, but at some point things are too finely granular to be meaningful.

(2,208 posts)Remove our tactical nukes aimed at Russia from Turkey? Dream on. lol
I am replying tongue in cheek here, so forgive me.
What exactly do we have there? Cruise missiles too, or just shorter range ballistic stuff? And can't even most of the ballistic stuff cover the Black Sea and the Caucuses?
edit added: Hey, saw your great link to the Nukes in Turkey down thread! Thanks for posting that.

(3,051 posts)Used to be stored and ready for deployment at Incirlik. I think about 60-90.
I was never impressed with how they were guarded.
