Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is Donald Trump's VP pick

Source: IndyStar

IndyStar has confirmed that Trump plans to announce Pence as his selection for vice president. A press conference will be held Friday to formally announce the decision. USA TODAY, Collin Brennan

Gov. Mike Pence is dropping his re-election bid in Indiana to become Donald Trump’s running mate.

IndyStar has confirmed that Trump plans to announce Pence as his selection for vice president, ending a weeks-long vice presidential casting call during which Trump vetted a handful of high-profile Republicans.

Trump's national campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, said "a decision has not been made." A formal announcement is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday in Manhattan.

The long-awaited decision upends the political landscape in Indiana and at least partially remakes the Trump campaign in Pence’s image.

That means Hillary is going to pick Tim Kaine... another white male Governor type from a major state.

Indiana was dead last in job creation in 2015, and has languished close to the bottom during the entire Pence tenure. Plus, the man has zero charisma.

An easy target, in so many ways.

The reports didn't exactly say "failing" but did state he was having a very rough time of it. I HOPE that indicates that he will certainly harm Don the Con at least in Indiana and hopefully elsewhere too!

I've always suspected that the rumors about the Donald being in this to deliberately sabotage the Rethugs' chances (both out of friendship with the Clintons and out of his own distate for the neo-fascist funk the GOP's been in over the past 20 years) were true.

Picking a zombie and liability like Pence would only reinforce that suspicion.

Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part.

I suspect even HE didn't expect to get away with them, but apparently the Rethugs are soo upset with their current bath of leaders, they'll accept almost anything as a replacement.

Funny though, even if all that is true, I don't think those Rethugs will get it that they're hated.

The man who made fools of us all out here in Hoosierland. He helped push through the anti-gay legislation that gave us that unwelcome spotlight for so long. Only silver lining -- he won't be our governor anymore. Good riddance.

Trump has sewed up the Muslim, Mexican, black and immigrant hate segments of the spectrum.
Pence brings strong credentials to complete the LGBT segment.

We don't hear much about it but I am sure a tiny bit of research would bring up stirring hate for the poor from both.

What more could Republicans want - a ticket of hate and proud of it.

On the national level. Demographically it is primarily white blue collar. Sure, Obama barely won there in 2008, and at the time it went blue for the first time in 44 years, then red again 4 years later. There are truly competitive swing states that are far more worthy of pouring resources into.

As governor, Pence's unfavorable ratings outweigh his favorable (42% versus 40%, according to another DU thread), and it was looking unlikely that he would be reelected as governor.

Taking Pence out of that race (Indiana prevents a candidate from running for both offices at the same time) gives Republicans a better chance of holding the governor's office, and that Republican candidate will have the ignominious duty of trying to carry the state for both himself and Trump.

It's pretty indicative of how screwed Republicans are this year: a loss-prevention move, not a reinforcing one, and its main purpose seems to be to hijack Pence's impressive donor train. It seems partly designed to protect turnout for the undercard races in the midwest, which Republicans are now in danger of losing across the board. It might not work.

A darker explanation might be that Republicans feel they have vote theft nailed down in those other places and are now looking for a "plausible explanation" in Indiana as well.

But honestly, I don't think they have anything nailed down. Competence has left them entirely, and they are a ship of fools now, adrift in their sea of hatred.
